The ride

The A542 leaves Llangollen past the romantic ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey before rising into the hills in a broad, sweeping arc that gives the pass its name. The gradient is gentle and the bends are open and well-sighted, making it one of the most approachable “must-ride” roads in Wales — brilliant for newer riders and satisfying for everyone. At the summit sits the famous Ponderosa Café, a legendary bikers’ meeting point for decades.

Beyond the top the road runs on towards Llandegla and the moors, linking neatly to the Evo Triangle.

Highlights

  • The iconic Ponderosa Café — a proper bikers’ institution
  • Wide, sweeping, well-sighted bends suited to all abilities
  • Valle Crucis Abbey and the Horseshoe Falls nearby
  • Great base for exploring Llangollen and the Dee Valley

Fuel & food

The Ponderosa Café at the summit is the obvious (and traditional) stop for a bacon roll and a brew. Fuel and more cafes down in Llangollen.

Best time to ride

Popular in all seasons and busy on sunny weekends — expect plenty of fellow bikers at the Ponderosa. The exposed summit can be windy and quick to ice up in winter, so pick your day.
