The ride
From the slate-town of Llanberis, the A4086 climbs steadily into the Pass of Llanberis (Bwlch Llanberis), a spectacular defile hemmed in by the Glyderau and the flanks of Snowdon. The road twists between huge tumbled boulders up to Pen-y-Pass, the col at the top and gateway to Snowdon’s most famous footpaths, before sweeping down towards Capel Curig with the peaks opening out around you.
It’s not a long ride, but few roads in Britain pack in this much drama per mile. Continue to Betws-y-Coed or loop back via Beddgelert to extend it.
Highlights
- Riding directly beneath Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), Wales’ highest mountain
- Pen-y-Pass and the historic Pen-y-Gwryd Hotel, base of the 1953 Everest team
- Some of the most photogenic mountain scenery in the UK
- Easy links to Betws-y-Coed, Beddgelert and the coast
Watch out for
This is one of the busiest tourist areas in Wales. Expect heavy car traffic, walkers crossing near Pen-y-Pass, cyclists and frequent stopping. Parking is limited and strictly enforced. Be patient — this is a road to savour, not to rush.
Fuel & food
Fuel in Llanberis or Betws-y-Coed. Cafes in Llanberis (great for a post-ride brew), Pen-y-Pass and Capel Curig. The Pen-y-Gwryd Hotel is a characterful, historic stop.
Best time to ride
Ride early or out of season to dodge the crowds. The pass is stunning in all weathers but the road narrows and cloud can drop fast — carry waterproofs and take care on damp, shaded sections.
Combine with the Evo Triangle and Horseshoe Pass for a classic North Wales trio. See the full routes index.
