The ride

The “Evo Triangle” is formed by three roads on the moors south of Denbigh: the A5, the A543 and the B4501. Together they make a roughly 20-mile loop of open, flowing bends across high, treeless moorland with excellent forward visibility. The A543 section past the Sportsman’s Arms (one of the highest pubs in Wales) and around Llyn Brenig is the star — long, linked curves that seem to go on forever.

It earned its nickname from the motoring magazines who used it for photography and testing. That reputation is a double-edged sword — see our safety note below.

Highlights

  • Open, sighted sweepers with big skies and little traffic
  • Llyn Brenig visitor centre — cafe, toilets and lakeside parking
  • Easy to link with the coast, Llangollen and the Horseshoe Pass

Ride it responsibly

The Evo Triangle’s fame attracts attention — including from the police, who patrol it and have used average-speed and mobile enforcement. It is a public road with junctions, farm traffic, cyclists and livestock. Enjoy the flow, respect the limits, and keep something in reserve for the unexpected.

Fuel & food

Fuel in Cerrigydrudion, Pentrefoelas or towards Denbigh. The Llyn Brenig visitor centre and the Sportsman’s Arms are the handiest refreshment stops on the loop.

Best time to ride

Dry days from late spring to autumn are ideal — this is exposed, high moorland that catches wind, rain and low cloud. Mornings are quietest and best for clear sightlines.

Chain it with the Horseshoe Pass and Llanberis Pass for a superb North Wales day. All routes on the index.
