Winter riding in Wales is not a stunt — many locals keep commuting and touring through the colder months. High mountain passes, though, demand a different rulebook from a dry May afternoon.
Choose lower and gritted
Prioritise maintained A-roads and valley routes. Exposed tops hold ice in shaded bends long after the forecast says “above freezing”. If cloud is sitting on the hills, swap the famous pass for a lower loop and save the summit for another day.
Daylight is your friend
Short days mean late starts and early finishes. Plan fuel and cafe stops in daylight, and avoid committing to remote single-track after the temperature drops toward dusk. A winter day ride that ends with fish and chips on the coast beats a stranded phone call from a misty ridge.
Kit that earns its keep
- Heated grips or gloves if you have them
- Base layers that wick, not cotton that chills
- A pinlock-ready visor and spare soft cloth
- Waterproof over-trousers you can trust in standing spray
- Bright layers for grey Welsh light
Surface hazards unique to the season
Black ice, leaf mulch compacted into corners, diesel more slippery when cold, and farm mud dragged onto lanes after wet fields. Cattle grids become skating rinks. Cross them upright and steady.
If you would not ride a corner in the dry at that speed, do not ride it in the wet at that speed either — winter multiplies mistakes.
