When Is the Best Time of Year to Ride in Wales?

Wales is a year-round riding destination — but timing your trip well makes all the difference. Here’s how the seasons stack up.

Ask ten Welsh riders for the best month to ride and you’ll get ten different answers. The honest truth is that Wales rewards riders in every season — you just need to know what each one offers, and pack accordingly.

Spring (April–May): the sweet spot

For many, late spring is peak riding season in Wales. The roads have dried out from winter, the days are lengthening, lambs dot the hillsides and the tourist crowds haven’t yet arrived. Mountain passes like the Black Mountain Pass are at their best — grippy and quiet. Mornings can still be crisp, so pack layers and watch for overnight frost in shaded valleys.

Summer (June–August): long days, busy roads

Summer brings the longest daylight (rideable light until nearly 10pm in June) and the warmest, most settled weather. The trade-off is traffic: coastal routes such as the Cardigan Bay coast and honeypots like Snowdonia get very busy, especially in the school holidays. Ride early, use the quieter B-roads, and you’ll still have a brilliant time.

Top tip: even in July, a Welsh mountain top can be 10°C colder and far wetter than the valley you set off from. Always carry waterproofs.

Autumn (September–October): the connoisseur’s choice

Arguably the most beautiful time to ride. The bracken turns gold and copper, the summer crowds evaporate, and there are still plenty of settled, sunny days. Watch for wet leaves, mud on rural roads after harvest, and earlier sunsets. September in particular is a hidden gem.

Winter (November–March): for the hardy

Winter riding in Wales is possible but demands respect. Mountain roads can carry ice, standing water and even snow, and many exposed cafes reduce their hours. Stick to lower, gritted routes, ride in the middle of the day, and treat every shaded corner as potentially icy. The reward? Roads almost entirely to yourself.

The bottom line

If we had to pick: mid-May and mid-September offer the finest balance of good weather, long-enough days and quiet roads. But with the right kit and a flexible plan, there’s no bad time to ride in Wales.
