Ask Mid Wales regulars for a road that sorts the curious from the committed and Abergwesyn’s Devil’s Staircase enters the chat. It is not long. It is not wide. It is absolutely memorable.
What the ride is like
Expect steep gradients, tight switchbacks and a sense that you have left the busy world behind. Traffic can be light, which is part of the charm — and part of the responsibility. If you have a problem here, help is not around the next retail park.
Who should ride it
Confident riders comfortable with low-speed hairpins, wet rock walls and oncoming locals who know the road. Newer riders should build up via easier Welsh routes first. Heavy fully-loaded tourers can do it, but patience beats heroics.
Practical prep
- Fuel in Llanwrtyd Wells, Tregaron or other towns before you commit
- Download offline maps — signal is often poor
- Pick a clear weather window; mist removes the joy and the margin
- Watch for sheep on the blindest bends
Make a day of it
