Empty tanks strand more touring plans in Mid Wales than bad weather. Filling stations are thinner on the ground than in England, hours can be short, and a scenic detour can burn range faster than the sat-nav promised.
Treat half a tank as empty
On remote loops through the Cambrian Mountains, the Elan Valley or the Abergwesyn country, you can ride for long stretches without a pump. Make a habit of topping up whenever you drop below half — especially before any high, exposed section where turning back costs more fuel than continuing.
Reliable towns for petrol
Build your day around known fuel hubs rather than hoping for a village garage. Useful staging points for motorcyclists include:
- North Wales: Caernarfon, Betws-y-Coed, Dolgellau, Bala, Llanrwst
- Mid Wales: Rhayader, Builth Wells, Llanidloes, Machynlleth, Aberystwyth, Llandovery
- South & Borders: Brecon, Abergavenny, Merthyr Tydfil approaches, Chepstow corridors
Coastal resorts and market towns are safer bets than isolated crossroads. If a route card takes you deep into open moorland, fill before you leave the last proper town.
Sunday and out-of-hours surprises
Some rural stations still close on Sundays or shut mid-afternoon. Card-only pumps help, but not every forecourt is 24-hour. If you arrive late after a long day on the Black Mountain Pass or the Beacons, do not assume the next village will save you.
Pro tip: screenshot fuel locations on your phone before you lose signal — and note which ones sell unleaded, not just diesel for farm traffic.
Range, wind and mountain riding
Headwinds on exposed ridges, cold weather and lots of low-gear climbing all dent economy. Sports bikes with small tanks and adventure bikes loaded with luggage need honest maths. Carry a small reserve plan: know the nearest town in each direction from your high point.
Electric riders
