A well-run group makes Welsh roads safer and more fun. A poorly-run one creates mid-corner surprises, frustrated locals and someone waiting alone at the wrong cafe.
Brief before you thumb the starter
Agree the route, fuel stops, pace philosophy and regroup points. Nominate a lead and a tail-end Charlie. Share who is least experienced — that rider sets the true pace, even if egos disagree.
Spacing on mountain roads
Staggered formation works on wider A-roads; on single-track and tight B-roads, ride single file with generous gaps. Leave room to stop for livestock without a chain-reaction grab of brakes. Never overtake within the group on a blind crest — Wales has an endless supply of those.
Overtaking traffic
Pass as individuals when safe, then reform. Do not stream past cars as a seven-bike blur on the Llanberis Pass in holiday traffic. Courtesy keeps the welcome mat out for the next riders.
If the group fragments in fog or rain, slow the front — do not speed the back.
Cafe and car park manners
Park tidily, keep noise down early mornings in villages, and thank staff who make space for helmets. Busy honeypots fill quickly on Sundays; a mid-morning arrival beats a noon free-for-all.
