Suzuki V-Strom 1000 GT Review
Reviewed by Big J
I was looking for an all-rounder as i was working up north and needed a bike that would commute Mon-Fri but cold be used for weekend fun too
I tested ths BMW GS, Triumph Tiger, Honda Varedayo and the V-Strom
The Strom came out on top not cos it was the best bike there (far from it), but because it had the best engine and equipment as standard
The engine is a peach with plenty of smooth low and mid range grunt from the 1000cc V-Twin, which is what you need for big distance riding.
The GT mdel came with full hard luggage, heated grips, hand guards and center stand thrown in, and all this for £7000 with 0% finance it realy was a no brainer! If you consider that a simular spec Triumph was £8900 and BMW a whopping £11800 maks the Strom seem even more of a deal.
In the first 4 weeks i did 2600 miles both commiting to liverpool and two up playing on the weekend.
I will say the front brake is a little weak and needs a good pull to get i biting, the OE pads have done 15000 miles now and still have 4-5mm on them, this is prob why they lack bite.
I'm about to put HH pads on or the big trip and hope they will add a little bite in conjunction with the braded lines i'v already fitted.
The big dissapointment tho was the OE suspension, as i found it was bottoming out and grinding it's belly on quite mild cornering :tdown This combinded with the Duel Porpose tyres they fit as standard didn't inspore confidence n the twisties
A trip to Maxton and a set of Pilot Road 2s transformed the bike and now it can hussle the twistis the the best of them
The standard screen does create alot of buffering at higher speeds but a small screen from Suzuki sorted that out a treat
I'd rate the standard bike at 5/10 but spend £400 sorting the brakes, suspension and screen then it gets a 9/10 for the price you pay
