Half of the escapees (it was originally ordered to be all of them) were shot by the Gestapo 'whilst trying to escape'. Some were detained in Sachsenhausen concentration camp where they were forced to march in endless circles - testing new versions of army boots. When they found out that they were to be executed, they turned on the guards and killed a couple before dying.

Few have heard of Sachsenhausen now as it was liberated by the Russians who did not keep film records.

Let the real story not be forgotten.

BTW, Three escapers, Per Bergsland (aka Rocky Rockland), Jens Muller and Bram van der Stok, succeeded in reaching safety. Bergsland and Muller reached neutral Sweden, and van der Stock arrived in Gibraltar via Holland, Belgium, France and Spain.
