Sunday morning ride
« on: May 15, 2011, 07:48:01 PM »
Carmarthen IAM meet Morrisons cafe every Sunday at around 9.45. Non members welcome as long as you are reasonably proficient.
Today 1200gs followed by me on Tigger then a brace of Bandit 1200 s. No overtaking & keep a good check on mirrors so that nobody is lost behind.
( tip. When riding in a group in 30 mph close up but do not follow in a line but to left or right of bike in front, provided safety allows )
( tip. When going from 30 to national speed limit leader does not blast off but waits until last rider is out of 30 mph. This way tail end rider does not need to exceed limit to keep up)
( tip. Put least experienced rider behind experienced leader. You can then learn about cornering lines etc )
Anyway we went from Carmarthen to Llandysul then to Newcastle Emlyn & after that on to Aberaeron where we had a break at the Celtic Cafe.
( top tip. If in Aberaeron always call in here as Fish & Chips excellent if a little pricey )
Refreshed we travelled to Lampeter , on through Talley , Llandeilo.
Here we split up to go either back to Carmarthen, Crosshands or Ammanford.
Nice morning ride & we hardly saw another bike on the road.
Apart from the "safety camera" near Pont Abraham & the unmarked Volvo hiding in the hedge at the Leekes sliproad ( yes I saw you ) we encountered not one fixed, mobile speed check or even a police car.
WE did however observe all speed limits even the 20mph one.
There is a certain satisfaction in coming down from 60 to 30 with the use of throttle & gear & no brake .The trick is anticipation in seeing the speedo down to 30 just as you pass the sign.

Sorry but this bit I dont really agree with. If you pass a national speed limit sign then you should get up to speed otherwise you will be going too slow for other motorists on the road and could put yourself and other riders at risk. The bikes at the rear will soon catch up at the next checkpoint without the need to exceed the speed limit.

Just my opinion though! :thumb_up

Point taken about progress from 30 to nat speed limit.
In traffic not so wise but where no traffic & smallish group of riders why not wait a few seconds so you all stay in touch.

Tips are just my opinion; you might have equally valid contrary opinions.

What is important is that discussion takes place on safety matters.

Something that makes you think more carefully about your riding has to be good  :thumb_up

yes OK then some good points but think nj was right about 30 in to 60 zones
and I'm sure sticking rigidly to some limits has it own concerns in some situations

:i_agree.  some good tips . Although This regimented style of group riding wouldn't really appeal to me . For me Biking is more about freedom and this would only defeat the object. Also part of the fun of riding with others is the diversity in riding styles and the added challenges that accompany that and would rather not even be on a bike than stuck in tractor - trailer way of riding.

Sounds like you had an exciting day, I may pop along next time for a bimble if the weather is good...

That said, I'm unsure if I could slow down with prowess such as  yours just yet  :scratch

I agree.

If you want to be safe then why not leave the bike in the garage, turn on the TV, or even take the car instead.
a LOT safer  :tup2

The only really safe life is one that was never born.
I am not about absolute but improved safety.
After all nobody would ride a bike with a very loose rusty chain on a bike that has not been serviced for years .......... oh perhaps I am wrong there.
Nobody would ride at 160 mph with his young son on the pillion, in jeans....... oops wrong again.
