Spring dreams
« on: December 21, 2011, 12:29:01 PM »
To dispel the winter blues I am dreaming of taking the bike abroad next Spring. So far I am thinking Santander or Bilbo & then off down to the Med, then back through France. Pop in to see a couple of friends on the way. Must do Millau bridge & some other sites & find some twisty bits.

Been going to France/ Spain for many years in cars, caravan & motorhome. This will be a first by bike.

Any advice?

Bikes don't leak oil',.... they mark their territory :o)           Sometimes it takes a whole tankful of fuel before you can think straight. Growing old is manditory... but growing up...well that my friends...is OPTIONAL!

I've done both crossings a few times. The Plymouth-Santander crossing is the quickest as the Portsmouth- Bilbao is used as a mini cruise. Both crossings have great facilities and you will be happy with either. My own thoughts are that next time I would be tempted to take the Santander crossing in order to get there quicker. The two Spanish ports are very close to each other so won't affect any route planning on the other side.
Ditto with Shazza's request!!   :scooter

i've been thinking of abroad/France ... before my piston rings blow.
But personally i will no doubt be going the long way round (no.. not with Charlie)
it would be the summer and Calais and either through west france (Bordeaux) or through the centre (Clermont Ferrand).. then back on the other route (central or west).
I think these are the best routes thro France, I dont like the east france routes (too busy/industrialised)
Milau is a must of course (not been there and not been abroad for many years)
Pyrenees are great
Pau is a must if u religious.. or not.
Fancy Spain too as did not get far thro there last time

Andora is spectacular.
med coast is good but not spectacular.. and very hot in summer.
and you wont get to see Brigitte,, tho Monaco is awe inspiring if you are impressed by wealth.
i thought italy was a sh-t hole tbh
alps ..well if its twisties???... try the route napolean (youll be glad to see a bit a straight and level afterwards.)

I have been tied with caring for mam lately.. but apparently I am entitled,as a carer, to a holiday, so I may be able to make it next summer~??

as far as `advice` goes ..
well I always went on a shoesrtring (damn uncomfortable) so never used the hotels n stuff so dont know anything about that .. though the youth hostels are ok if u stuck .. o can use them at any age.

*  take plenty cash .. their forrin holidays can catch u out (Bastile day dun it for me .. 3 days without food .. so weak i even dropped the bike outsid the camp site)
*  travel as light as u can
*  take a medium weight bike .. a heavy bike is sometimes hard to park on earthy camp slopes.
*  wear suitable gear .. say textiles with air vents .. waterproof .. those french storms can come sudden and very hard
*  wear light coloured textiles .. black leathers and black textiles make u sweat like el

Make sure you have a Welsh flag and a Cymru sticker on the back.
The locals will realise your not English and greet you with open arms.

Je ne suis pas Anglais. Je suis aux Payes de Galles.  Ok got that.
I am not big on planning, but I can get by in French ( the French are charming people ) .

Got to do it in 2012 before Alzheimers ( no I cannot spell it either ) kicks in. I once asked directory enquiries for the Dyslexic Society number & I swear she asked me how to spell it.

Best to go on my own as my circumstances don't allow for planning as I am a carer. Hence the no planning bit.
So will probably just book the ferry the day before & off to go.

Bear in mind the santander Ferry doesnt start back up until around april  :thumb_up

Follow our route, partly or whole, takes in some of the best roads the pyrenees has to offer, two up fully loaded and on a 950 supermoto and still managed to have some serious fun in the twisties.
