Go West- 10th April 2011 *pics added
« on: April 10, 2011, 11:08:00 PM »
I got a text message from Beads on Saturday saying he had got a going out pass for Sunday. Great news but at this point I was due to go to Brighton for the weekend. Anyway, front tyre was in a terrible state so called the man with a van to come out. He did, and did a great job but by the time it was all over it was too late to bother going to Brighton. Perfect, called Beads and suggested a trip out West. We had talked about it before, the weather looked perfect and the chance was too good to pass up. The plan was set.

Was looking forward to the trip so much it disturbed my sleep (or was it the Chinese). Whichever it was I was wide awake by 4.30 wanting to go. I text Beads at quarter to 5 - early but not to him - he had been in work since 3am so I knew it was ok. Thankfully his job was running to plan and we were on schedule for a 10.30 kick off. I even washed my bike whilst I was waiting.

Plan was - get down the M4 as fast as possible without risking a ban. Once in deapest West Wales drive through miles of country lanes full of dung n gravel and visit Beads brother and his family. Worth a stop off since Beads' sister in law runs a cake making business from home. Mmmm chocolate and toffee cupcakes. Back into the country dung tracks. I was happy enough just to be able to stay on the bike - Beads thought it was perfect conditions for wheelies - and wheely he did. At first very polite hovver type wheelies and then something a tad more raucus.

After this we headed even further west through Haverfordwest and down to Newgale. I love Newgale beach - its beautiful with a great camp site along it. At this point I started suffering from tent envy. The long ride was really enjoyable and I want to go on a biking camping holiday. Drinks on the pebbles watching the surf. Ahhh perfect.

Back to the bikes and over to Solva to the pub where Beads was a cheffing legend before joining the army. Wondering whether there is anything better than eating a ploughmans on the quayside in the sun? Yes there is - it just came to me, a ploughmans with a side order of garlic bread. By this time zips had become quite a challenge.....

Onwards to the last and furthest stop of the journey - St Davids. A quick spin through town, wasting no time on the ancient cathedral and all that culture nonsense, straight down to the beach again. Another corker. Tent please!

Sadly it was now well past the time that we were due to leave. Teary behind my vizor we headed off. Wizzy roads back to the motorway then ride like hell. Ooops whats that - oh yes I need a waz - tactical toilet choice, Mc Donalds. Best get a burger as it would look rude to just go in and avail ourselves of the facilities and leave.

About 10 hours after setting off there we were safe and sound back in Barry. What a brilliant day out. Best biking day Ive had.

Several near death experiences to report too:

Landrover near crosshands - heavy breaking and lane swerves - nearly took Kyle out then I tried to avoid him and he just about had me. Very close and messy.

Horsebox 5 minutes later - nearly got my head rammed up a horses arse as this one came to a near halt on the a40 for no obvious reason.

Garlic Bread solva quay - too big, had to switch heart to manual as it couldnt cope.

Speed bumps entering St Davids - nearly took Kyle off as they were hard to see. I was watching wondering what he was doing and then hit one too at speed and nearly came a cropper.

Passive chain smoking - all day - give it up mate!

Im sure Beads will post some photos as soon as he has the time. Great day - apols if the report is too long. Its in direct proportion to my enthusiasm.

Cake Update -

Yes there was a big tray of cakes. Half were chocolate with a swirl of toffee butter icing on the top (these were my favourite), the other half were vanilla with vanilla icing. Both were moist and not overly sweet meaning you could get quite a few in before you hit any kind of barrier!

Apologies I should have done a separate cake report in the first place to make it easier. Sorry Dhd - won't happen again.
