Its really hard to say 'yeah go buy it' just by looking at pictures. But for the year, the milage aint excessively high. Its a Honda, so the engines are generally bullet proof, and the build quality around that time was generally good.

It's a nice easy bike to start building confidence with. And would probably more than people would imagine.

One thing. The front footpegs have been changed for those gay pink ones. WHY???  It has probably had an oopsy once or twice. So if you are going to go have a look at it, take someone who knows what they are looking out for.  I dont mind helping out to go see anything as long as its not too far.......

That bike has been a long time, I was looking at it (online) before I bought a Bandit 5 months ago. As Fuurr said get someone to have a look at it with you, good bikes though  :thumbsup

Hi Fuzzrr,

I didnt mean it that way, i just wanted to know people's general perception to this particular make and model. any major issues to look out for, like dodgy steering with some ford vans without powerassit.

thats a good observation about the footpeg, so these things are only known to people who have used the bike or have some expertise in the field. Thanks for the offer to help out to look for the bike, but i dont want to waste your time. I have to look at the bike physically and if i prefer i will give you a shout to give me a helping hand before i buy the bike.

Thanks, much appreciated.

Anyway i am only looking at similar street / naked bikes, so would you recommend any other similar make/models which might be suitable?

ok, but the zx6r riding position is a bit hunched right? not very upright like the hornet or yamaha xj600n...

03 plate faired 600 Bandit one owner from new, 5k on the clock but it was a cat D write off so £1500 was a fair price.
Good luck with whatever you decide on  :thumbsup

I dont think there were any issues with the Hornet to speak of..... Its a Honda after all.  Only thing you may find is, you may get a bit bored with it after a while, they are a bit asthmatic so to speak.  Have you looked at an early Bandit 12? They are pretty robust, and the build quality was way better in those days compared to Suzukis as of late.  If you can find a good example of one of those they are a great bike. Comfy, and will hoon along if you want it too.

Bandit - robust engineering, gets a bit boring with time
bandit 12? - i have seen bandit 600... do you mean 1200cc? i guess it going to be more expensive to insure and repair...
xj600n/diversion - remember reading generally alright, tempted with a few sub 1000 ones i saw online...
frazer - saw one for about 1800 (yr 2003)... a bit high above my budget... as i still need to pay for classes, cbt, das and helmet& protective clothing... student as well... so have to save dearly for sometime for this i guess.

whats cat D writeoff? minor accident, needing further repair to get it through MOT? does it affect cost of insurance, even though you may not be the rider responsible for the accident?

Cat D is an insurance write off but has been reapired afterwards. It is legal to do, but it is probably on a Q plate and it does affect the value
I dont think the older smaller Yams were up in the build quality stakes compared to the Honda or the Suzuki. I didnt realise you hadn't passed your test, so yes, maybe give the Bandit 1200 a miss.
Personally I dont think you would go wrong with the Hornet. And its the best looker out of the bikes you are mentioning.

apart from the underseat exhausts, i started off with a bandit 600, kept it for 6 months then trading up to something quicker, they do exactly what they say on the tin.

at the end of the day a hornet 600 uses the same lump as a cbr 600, so you cant go wrong

My SRAD was on a cat D write off, but we could never see anything wrong with it. We think it must have had some panel damage ( which for a new bike would be costly).

I had no problems with it at all, but as Fuzz says, it will affect the value of the bike. But then again when i found out about this I got the bike for a cheaper price, so swings and roundabouts really.

My Bandit had been dropped on it's side and dented the can, cracked a fairing and snapped off the indicator. For the age, mileage and condition I couldn't get one for less than £2300 so I was happy paying £1500. If I have to make a claim it wont be worth as much but I should think I'd get my £1500 back. Trick is not to make a claim  :thumbsup
