Right-hand wave.
« on: May 15, 2010, 05:15:14 PM »
This is probably quite obvious to most of you. Often when I nod or wave at a biker coming the other way he/she sometimes gives a wave back with their right-hand. I'm not that experienced but I'd like to know how come you don't suddenly decelerate doing this (without pulling in the clutch slightly). I've usually got the throttle open so as to have drive and engine-braking available if needed so letting go to wave would result in engine-braking?

The instructions said "Use Windows XP or greater" so I installed Linux!
A Life? Cool! Where can I download one of those?

yes you are correct, you will slow down when closing the throttle, it just comes from experience and being aware of your surroundings and any hazards in the near vicinity.

just nod or use your left hand for now. on the continent they use a leg so as not to lose control of the bike.

cheers

pj
if their too slow "do em"

Don't take your hand off the throttle.. :shocked

You run the risk of fucking it up big style......

Just a nod or left hand wave is fine mate, I've been riding for years, I NEVER take my hand off the throttle..it's just to dangerous , especially as your still pretty new to biking, it'll cause complications that you don't need..

Stick to a polite nod mate , that's your safest bet. :cheers

Don't worry, I have no intentions of releasing the throttle when the power is on. I do sometimes (just to relieve stiffness) when coasting in top gear but I keep my acknowledgments to nods and left-hand waves. Maybe I should start waving my legs in the air instead, should get some interesting looks.. :scratch

Just a nod is fine guys, if you have to wave, use your left hand! Dont use your legs though as bikers behind you might think you want them to pass or are indicating to them that the road ahead is clear! Not sure how many others hold their leg out to mean this but I certainly do and I have seen others do this too!

i wave with my right hand, normally whilst travelling down hill or towards a corner or gentle breaking zone when the throttle is off  :thumbsup some times i use this time to stretch, adjust myself or just rest my arms/back by leaning on the tank.

use your foot to cover the rear break  you will also be able to drop down the gears under gentle deceleration, the centrifugal force will keep the bike straight, athough you can force it to gently turn by adding weight to your foot pegs.
before people bitch and say how unsafe this is i was shown this years ago on by an adi rider to prove how little input your body movement has and how little input is required to turn the bike, ie from this you can then turn the bike using opposite steering with just one finger on the end of either bar.........

I waved at someone at Culverhouse Cross yesterday, I was slowing down at the lights so wasn't really holding on to the throttle anyway. But if I'm riding normally a nod all your going to get!
