Ride Out Ride Right - Free Motorcycle Training Course
« on: March 05, 2011, 11:28:12 AM »
I found this on our WB Facebook page

SWF&RS has now launched Ride Out, Ride Right to help keep motorcyclists safe on the roads.  If you’re interested in taking part in our Free Observation Rides then please read on.
You will be met by one of our three team riders at a pre arranged meeting point.
You will ride to a Fire Station at either, Abergavenny, Usk, Merthyr or Maesteg where you will be given a short presentation over a beverage.
The presentation includes Observation, Hazards and the Principals of cornering.
Following the presentation you will then go out for an observation ride which will last for approximately an hour
At the end of the ride you will be asked for your feedback and thoughts on the ride.
What we would like you to get out of this, is to consider further training through recognised bodies i.e.: - Bike Safe, ROSPA, IAM, MAG etc……..but most of all we want you to enjoy your riding and stay safe on our roads.

Ride Out Ride Right is an intelligence led programme based on statistics gathered from Partnership Agencies and Local Goverment.

Considerable market research was carried out by the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service Road Safety Team with regards to the type of bike that would generate interest, and the Ducati 1198 was the bike that came back with the WOW factor to break down barriers and allow for engagement.

We are looking to encourage riders to enhance their riding skills but under no circumstances will training or assessments be given, observations may be given if requested and rider hazard awareness will be raised by identifying hazards on set pre-planned routes. The idea behind the programme being to encourage riders on to the Bike Safe Programme, Rospa and IAM.

At this moment there are approximately:

80,000 registered Motorcycles in Wales
Motorcycle riders are 30 times more likely to die on the roads than car drivers
On average 28 riders die on the roads of Wales each year
Both South Wales and Gwent Police are aware of the reasoning behind the scheme and are fully supportive of Ride Out Ride Right.

I fully support what the Fire Service are doing here (and they are nice guys who run the scheme) but it is wrong to call this 'Training'.  It's not. It's an observed assessment ride by Fire Service Personnel who are not qualified Instructors.

Similar to when the Bikesafe Scheme started in South Wales. It was run by BikeCopswho weren't 'Instructors' (I know because I ran it it from it's inception until 2001).

If you want proper training then you need a proper qualified Instructor.

At the moment anyone who holds a bike licence can charge money and offer bike training ( but not for L plate course- this must be done by a DSA Aprroved Training Body (ATB).  But for Post Test training, anyone can put themselves in the Yellow Pages and offer 'training'.

This is why the DSAhave introduced the Enhanced Rider Scheme, but at present the Register for Trainers is only voluntary and you have to pay to go on it.

Even this doesn't offer 'Advanced' training.

Much has been posted on here about the costs of bike training but you must remember that properly qualified Motorcycle Instructors are professionals.

I could plaster my walls if I wanted, but if I wanted it done properly I pay for a professional plasterer to do it.

The Bikesafe scheme was introduced to promote post test training, similar now to the Fire Service scheme and the benefits of the fire service doing it is it might attract some riders who for whatever reason don't want to go to the Police to be followed around.

Both schemes carry great value as there is still a generation of riders who got a licence with no training whatsoever so any input to aid them is of value.

Having your riding assessed is always a good idea

Seconded!

These bike safe and similar courses are an excellent idea, but they are as stated by Froody, not training.

The primary point behind these observed rides is to help identify where your riding needs improving.
You take the feed back to a professional instructor who can use this as a starting point to improve your skills.

Instructors on the RPMT are few and far between because the registration is too expensive, I know I was going to register until they told me the fee.

Ask your local (ATB - Approved Training Body) Motorbike School if they do post test training. It's likely they do and would be really happy to help you.

We all want motorcycling to be a safer pass-time, safety improves with training.
