Motorcycle DAS, CBT & Theory Training Advice & General Tips
« on: November 15, 2009, 06:12:17 PM »
Ladies & Gents as we have a few new welshbikers members joining us everyday I thought we could have a advice section

Those of us with a full motorcycle licence have successfully completed if not some then all of the above courses

Now knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad

So lets help as many welshbikers members as we can be offering some of our advice

It also maybe a good idea to (only if you want to) offer some of our L plate members a group tour around the local haunts because as a learner you tend to go around on your own

Lets try & be as helpful as we can with this

Ill open the topics please dont start anymore unless you pm the mods or myself first

DONT LET IT GO ONE DEGREE OF TOPIC

THAT ALSO REPLYS TO "YEAH I AGREE" SIMILES

Lets be constructive & help our fellow bikers in wales & even the UK

Learn how to U Turn......Pick a very quiet street that you can only just turn the bike at full lock..then practice, practice, practice until you can do it in your sleep...aids your slow speed skill and is required to pass your full test.....

I kept falling off trying to do it.......fell off on my first test as well.........

Perseverance is the key.......... :thumbsup

I would go as far as finding a car park, and on the weekend use this as your slow speed practice,if you know the width of the test road mark out the same in the car park and practice,i.e throttle, brake, clutch control.

If the park is very spacious you can practice riding in circles, closing the circle as you get used to it,you can also circle right, and then left, get used to turning in the direction that feels strange, some can circle right better than left, and visa-versa,Complete confidence, complete control, is what your after.Try to be accompanied by an experienced rider to watch over your performance, and praise or criticise,as you practice.Walk before you run. :cheers

Hello

I have posted this link from Youtube where you can go thru/watch the Official DSA Motorbike Test parts 1>15. So if anyone is thinking of doing there DAS they can have a look and know what to expect.

Hi All, New Rider here (still learning!)...

I was wondering if I could pick your brains and get some basic questions I have answered (I apologise in advance if these are basic, run of the mill question)...

1. For learning purposes, should I stick to riding in an industrial estate or force myself
onto the main roads and 'into' traffic? and what key skills should I be continually
practising?

2. Counter steering - should I concern myself with this at this early/pre full licence
stage? Also, what speeds should I be going in order to know when to lean going around a
corner or roundabout?

3. Can anyone recommend any good runs for learners around the Cardiff area?

4. As I'm totally new to motorbikes, can someone recommend a good "beginners" book to learn
the basics of motorbike maintenance (dealing with chains, etc.) or even better any one-day
or night classes covering this?

5. My plan is to ride the 125 for a couple of months and then do the DAS route. Will
getting accustomed to the controls of the 125 hinder my mastering of the larger DAS bikes
or should I go straight into the DAS now? Basically what I'm trying to gather here is what
will riding for several months on my 125 gain me and could anything be a hinderance in this
method?

6. I've subscribed to RiDE magazine and frequently read others; but I haven't really a clue
how one bike compares to the other (e.g. photo of Bill and Maude on their Honda Goldwing in
France and another pic of Ritchie 'Born to be Wild' Robbins on his Ninja ZX 6R). I do know
about cars though and so can someone produce a basic list giving the motorbike equivalents
to:
   6.1 The Ford Focus/Fiesta/Mondeo
   6.2 The Golf GTi
   6.3 A basic/fast Subaru/Evo
   6.4 The Porsche 911
   6.5 An average/circa £100k Ferrari/Lambourgini

thanks
Stu

1) try your slow speed movements on an industrial estate/car park such as figure of 8's, slow speed riding, emergency stop etc. When on the road get into the habit of mirror-lifesaver-signal-maneuver.
2) Don't worry too much about counter steering, you'll prbably find you are doing this already without even realising it! Same with the lean. remember you arent trying to impress the instructor, just showing him you can ride safely. Take any corner at a speed you are comfortable with and keep your lane discipline.
3) Any of us would be happy to take tou out for a spin, i ride from ponty to cardiff everyday for work so you're more than welcome to tag along
4) I found watching a mate is invaluable but a haynes manual for your bike and youtube videos have helped me a great deal
5) Double edged sword here really, I found i am more confident that i stuck with my 125 and my handling is a hell of a lot better. I guess everyone is different and there are pros and cons to both points.
6) Generally th cream ofthe 125's are the CBR/YZF/CBF and the varadero. Supposedly the best 250cc is the Ninja and 600cc wise the honda cbr 600rr comes highly recomneded along with the bandit and zx6r. I'm sure there are more i havent listed!

My instructor advised me to try and lose the examiner during the module 2 test. I thought he was joking but he explained that examiners generally like to see a confident rider and that if he can't see you, he can't fault you. I wasn't sure I'd be able to lose an experienced examiner but as it turned out mine rode a Goldwing and was held up everywhere. I had at least one car between us for the most complicated part of the test route. I knew that I had made a few little mistakes but I passed with only three minor faults :thumbsup He even congratulated me on a very good ride!
