Young riders (6yrs)
« on: June 08, 2010, 04:57:00 PM »
Hello all,

I live in Landimore on the Gower and am in the process of purchasing a mini bike for my son (he is 5 and a half). Yes, I am buying a decent model that is safe for him, not a Korean knockoff.

Anyways, I have spent the day trawling around looking for all the things a father would want to find... tracks, trainers, gear etc and have found that as a person new to this area it seems that there is only one track anywhere nearby and that is Cefn Park MX...

As there is nothing else around, I assume this track to be massively busy and therefore worry if it is going to be suitable for such a young novice?

Also, as I live on the Gower, there is plenty of farmland around here... how approachable are farmers usually when you go to them and ask permission to ride in an unoccupied field?

Thanks :)

B

by the way... the off road track in Cardiff (CMX Centre You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login) appears to be shut down?
Their website yesterday appeared to have nothing later than July '09 happening, does anyone know if this track is re-opening?

I am pretty sure there are closer off road venues for you. Furnace near llanelli, and pontyberem way aswell.... I think they are a bit 'unofficial', but on land that the owner has and doesnt mind bikes on there.  I will try and find out in the week for you......

There are also a few tracks in Pembrey forestry that you may be interested...... But they are just tracks through the woods, and not proper purpose built.

Thanks Fuzzzr
Much appreciated.

Any view on how best to approach farmers about riding across their lands? What rights I have that I can push if they require a nudge?

Youor rights would stand in this sort of context........................................

Barrulus - 'Hi MrFarmer, can my lad ride on your land'

Farmer - 'no, f*ck off'

Barrulus - 'thak you very muchly'

That about sums your rights up.

Although it could go the other way............ But most farmers are wankers!!  :handjob

What about commons?
I live right by the Cefyn Brynn (You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login), seems this vast open area would be great for scrambling with my kid and it is common land.

I don't know what the laws in this country about riding on this sort of land is...

All of the Gower is listed as summat of 'natural beauty' by law, in the UK..... And would probably get you in shit if you were caught out on the commons. You cannot go out there cutting up the land on a crosser.

There are byways, you can find..... But then the bike has to be road legal. So that aint an option either.  I'll try and get some info off my mate for you.  He must go somewhere to practice.  I'll get back to you.

He may know..... But Jase is a more of a 'off the beaten path' on a road legal heap of shite........

Barrulus is going to need a dedicated off road facility for his lad to thrap around on.  Jase may know summat, but it aint the sort of thing he does.  No harm in asking though.   :thumbsup

I may just need to know some handy fields to start with, seems most tracks don't like kids under 6yrs old, and mine is only 6 in November and BUSTING to get onto a bike.
Me too dammit, I haven't ridden for years now, and it is such an awesome thing to do with your son :)
