Devon and Cornwall Police claim revealing the locations of automatic number plate recognition cameras would hinder crime fighting

A police force is fighting a legal ruling which could pave the way for thousands of secret traffic cameras across Britain to be revealed.

Devon and Cornwall Police claim revealing the locations of its 45 automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras would hinder crime fighting.

Their locations were requested under Freedom of Information laws by Guardian Government Computing, which appealed to the Information Rights Tribunal (IRT).

A scary one this.
I agree with ANPR cameras Automatic Number Plate readers, as there NOT speed cameras.
These ANPR are great for catching drivers with no Insurance MOt and Tax .
Banned drivers who if involved in a accident are more likely to leave you injured and run off , or leave you losing your no claims bonus or cars that are death traps driven by morons who dont give a monkeys about you or me.

Gwent Police already have dozens of this mounted on the rear of traffic cars and have done for a few years.

Speed cameras are different and have to have signs and there location revealed so no debate on that one.

I think those sneaky coppers hiding behine trees in Trecastle on the A40 toward Llandoverey with the very Dodgey LT 20-20 SPeed guns should be hung out to dry as they just target bikes and the camera has been proved to be inaccurate with " "slippage" as they have to move it to lock on to a bike.

Long live the ANPR and death to the speed gun.

Yes, what you see is an ANPR camera (this model is a PIPS make). There's no indication of speed and the system takes a single jpg image for identification of the vehicle to the operator (otherwise the cop would be searching all the number plates of all the traffic).

There are two cameras in there, a colour camera for the stills and an Infra Red for the number plate reading. The black bobbles are Infra Red emitters.

I have insurance and a tax disc on my bike - any reason why I should subsidise your use of the road?

Actually ANPR is a tremendous crime fighting tool way beyond no tax etc and there's a good chance it won't pick up your bike unless the Reg Plate is on the front. :eek

ANPR is a fabulous bit of kit...really good tool ...passively reads EVERY plate that goes past....

Until something comes up with a marker like no insurance etc....

Massively useful in fighting major crime....
Doesn't interfere with normal law abiding people who occasionally go above the speed limit...Like us lot!!!!

Helps find stolen vehicles too. Top bit of kit tbh.

I know some folk complain about a big brother uk but this kit makes our roads safer, catches thieving bastards and generally chuffing rocks.  More of them please, and put them in lampposts to catch scrotes that avoid dual carriageways and other trunk roads. :)
