Possible new bike
« on: May 08, 2011, 08:44:15 AM »
Went up to Riders in Cardiff yesterday, theres a 1098s there calling me  :drool
2007 , 1700 miles, full termi system otherwise mint and standard.
Got a part x price for my gsxr, looking around £4200 to change ??
Planning a test ride next week sometime, i last rode a 1098 2 years ago, was the first big bike i had ridden, loved it back then but couldnt afford it.
Bit of me thinks its a great idea, bit thinks its too much money  :help

I'd love a 1098/1198 they are different but without any of the usual compromises you expect to make for being different.

What colour is the one you're after?

They do a red/black one with silver tank which is dribblesome  :drool :drool

£4,200 aint too much to change Mark........ And as my mum recently told me (after years of her preaching to save for rainy days), 'you cant take it with you'.....

But....... do cost in service charges before you jump at it. Ducatis can be a little more fruity on the wallet to keep serviced. And they really cannot be done by none specialist mechanics so to speak. So if you plan on doing the millage on it, bear that in mind.  :tup2

This is a red one, i think the one pope is talking about is the 2010 corse model, looking about 15k for one of those.
The current price of an 1198s new is 17k, with the full system its almost a 20k bike !!!
fuzz has got it spot on, thats the only worrying part, the longterm costs of owning it compared to my gsxr, i do all my own servicing on that so that costs about £50 a year, the 1098 is 4 yr old so will have its 2nd cambelt service done before i buy it, comes with a 2yr warranty but dont want the gap thingy they are trying to put into the price as it wont be financed .
I reckon on £300 on the smaller service , £500 on the bigger one.
Going to have to sort out insurance too, last time i had the brain wave of buying one and keeping the gsxr, that was a no go

Is it the Ducati ownership status you are after????

Because......... For ten and a half large, there are better road bikes for that money..........Without the big 'ger' service costs.

red ones are faster......   :innocent

When i asked riders for a price on my 97 916, i had a quote for a normal service of £400.
£600 if i wanted the belts done.... but they said with the older bikes when they strip them apart they often find loads wrong inside... they said the bill often goes up in to the £1000's, and thats when they return the engine home in a box.

Newer ones should be cheaper to service, but price it all up first.
You can still service them your self you know.... oil and filter change on mine the other day took 30mins... Also popped the covers off to have a look at the belts.

No, not really, just always fancied one.
The other worry i have is being able to sell it on if it ends up being not for me.
When i think sensibly i would say no, but then i see or hear one :drool
Lol

hi Mark don't listen to the negative comments from people who have never owned one.

There are always people ready to tell hearsay horror stories  :roll_eyes

Just get one and budget a little bit more to get it serviced, not the end of the world

if the Gap thingy they are trying to flog you is actually Gap insurance it may be worth considering. if god forbid you had the bike written off, your fault or non fault the gap insurance picks up the difference. your normal insurance will rarley cover the price you paid for the bike and the Gap insurance covers this.

sorry for boring you if you already knew this......i'm a little bored in work TBH.

Just read the thread again........ And not one horror story or negative remark in sight Pope.  :scratch

It is a known fact that Ducati services are more expensive than any other bike due to the belts having to be changed regularly. Myself and others have just pointed that out. What is negative about giving some advice that he may not have thought about.

None of us have said 'do not buy one', because as you pointed out, we have never owned one. Exactly the same as I wouldn't say 'yeah, go buy one and budget for the servicing'.....as like you said, we wouldn't be in a position to say so, as we hadn't owned one.  :roll_eyes
