Missing Drain Covers - Warning
« on: July 26, 2011, 10:28:59 AM »
On the News this morning there was a report about a sharp increase in the thefts of Cast Iron Man Hole Covers and Drain Covers. Over a recent weekend one local authority had 70 stolen in one area.  This obviously leaves a real hazard for any road user but particular for bikers.

The thefts generally occur in quiet residential roads, or quiet rural areas, over night or over the weekend.  So be particularly careful if riding in the dark or on your Monday morning commute.

A nasty shock could be waiting.

Cars can straddle them without any real problem, so leave yourself a bit more space when following traffic to give yourself time to deal with it.

If you come across a missing cover report it immediately to your local council who will be able to put out signs and warnings whilst it is dealt with.

If it catches you out, this really would be a case of 'Biker Down' - the Drain !

Thanks for the heads up, I'm terrible for following closely behind slow traffic (when you can't filter or overtake) and could get caught out with this. Bastards will nick anything  :nono

So why don't councils & government listen to what the biking world has been saying for years

Change them for anti slip abs plastic ones, this would cure the problem & also save lives of dozens motorcyclists & cyclists every year when the slippery metal surface of these manholes caused accidents & deaths.

NO what will happen is they will be replaced & nicked again because the price of scrap in at a all time high instead of plowing some extra money into make plastic ones that will pay for themselves in a year.

Stig,  the report did say that in Luton for example they are replacing theirs with plastic which are stamped 'Non Metalic' to prevent future thefts.

I can't believe that have to mark them as non metallic as the thieving gits are so stupid they can't tell when they lift them!

It's prob for health & safety reasons so the council don't get sued when the gits put their backs out when lifting them up & the disappointment the plastic versions will cause them

My mate puts in electric cables for Rail network he tells me that at the end of day if they don't put the power through them,
that new lot are gone by 5 am the next day. Gippos are always in the area watching where they work. :leaving

If it's Luton they'd need a few other languages on it.

just google
"electrocuted stealing cables" and you will come up with lots of stories such as
"Thief electrocuted trying to steal copper cable carrying 11,000 volts"
