A bit short notice but if anyone wants to brave the weather I am doing another Teddy Bear & Toy Run to the Children's Casualty Unit at The Heath Hospital, Cardiff.  Sunday the 11th of December.  Meeting at The Caerphilly Mountain Snack Bar,on the A469 at the top of Caerphilly Mountain.

Meeting at 9.30-10am for a departure to the Hospital about 10.30.

When I was a traffic bike cop I spent a lot of time in the Casualty Unit dealing with the victims of road crashes, unfortunately many of them children.  So in discussion with staff, myself and another colleague set up a fund to raise money to buy toys for the kids.  Since retiring the fund is no more but many Teddies found new homes as a result.

It was felt that if an injured child becomes attached to a Teddy or a toy whilst they are being treated, it aids their recovery if they are allowed to take it home with them.  Obviously there is no funding in the NHS for this.

So since retiring I have arranged a Teddy Bear run each year to take Teddies, (and their friends) to the Casualty Unit so that any child unfortunate enough to find themselves in the Emergency Room over Christmas have a little friend to help them through the ordeal.

If you can help then it would be great to see you on Sunday.  If you can't make it but are still able to donate a Teddy or a few then please let me know and I will gladly pick them up to make sure they make it safely to the hospital.

If you are able to support this, then smaller Teds are better.  Handsized and nothing too cumbersome that they might hinder the staff in treating the child, but a little friend that they can keep with them is preferred.

Ikea for example are selling Teds and cuddly toys for as little as 49p upwards so you can fill your panniers for just a few pounds.

The hospital staff are expecting us at around 10.30-11am and after dropping off the Teds I'll continue the Ride Out out to the Vale of Glamorgan and up to Norms Cafe at The Downs, Cowbridge for breakfast.

Thanks Chums.  Hope you can make it. :cya

Hi Chums.  Thanks for that. If you want to text or call me on 07545567273 I can arrange collecting the Teds Chassa.  That's really kind of you.  Thanks.

Also, from Caerphilly is just a few miles North of Cardiff.  So traveling from Chepstow, of you use the M4 you can either take junction 32 and turn on to the A470 (towards Merthyr).

Once on the dual carriageway take the 2nd exit, signposted Caerphilly.  There are then brown tourist signs for The Mountain.

Or, more straightforward is take the M48 onto the A48, Eastern Avenue to Gabalfa Interchange by The Heath Hospital.  Turn right onto the A469 'Caerphilly Road'.

Stay on Caerphilly road for a few miles and it will climb up the mountain, passing Thornhill crematorium.  As you reach to top the snack bar is just off the main road on your right.

I can be contacted on the above number on the day if you need directions but I'm sure as you get close........ You will be able to smell the coffee and bacon!

You will be more than welcome.

Cheers.

Doing dsomething very similar with the south wales trf, apparently the hospital wont accept any cuddly toys and has sent us a list of things they do need, money being the main one so they can put it towards new equipment

Which Hospital is that?

A difference here might be that we are not taking these to the Children's Ward but to the Children's Casualty Unit.

I think the Ward (at the Heath, anyway) is well provided for but casualty- with a short term turn over isn't so well provided.

I've checked with the Staff Nurse and they will welcome them all.

So if the TRF has any cuddly toys they will be given a good home at casualty.
