Ron Haslam Race School July/August
« on: June 25, 2011, 09:52:58 PM »
Hey all,
After a chat with Ninja Warrior we have decided to have a go at the Ron Haslam race school at Silverstone sometime either end of July or beginning of August depending on when suits the majority.

For those interested i will pop some feedback below.

Anyone who doesn't know about it, here is a quick taster.

List price for the course is £279 for the Premier course this includes:
Loan of a Honda CBR600RR ABS
Full leathers
Helmet
Gloves
Boots
Waterproofs
Basically all you need to do is turn up! you can supply any of the above kit if you wish...

They supply 1 instructor to 2 pupils.
You have a class session then about 15 min on track, that's about 8-10 laps
They use the International circuit, this includes, Hanger straight, Stowe, Vale, Club, Abbey and the new Arena section, you'll hit 140 on the straights.
In total you get 3 track session with the same instructors, he is your lead man, and riding instruction/tips/encouragement. You don't need to be a Rossi to go, lots use it as a taster, as they supply all the kit!!
At the end there is a debrief, goody bag, certificate etc.

Once you have done the Premier you can return for the Elite course, List price £379
This included all kit as above but with 1 - 1 instruction on a CBR1000RR Fireblade
4 x 20 min sessions, lunch, drinks etc, Datalogged runs etc

YOU CAN'T DO THE ELITE BEFORE COMPLETING PREMIER!! (you have 2 years from Premier to complete the Elite)

Both courses include insurance.

The way I am looking at it is a track day is £100 ish plus expenses of tyres, fuel etc etc etc so I know its expensive but I plan to take the bin it to win it attitude as it's their bike, leathers and insurance at the end of the day - not often you get that oppurtunity   :drunk

I am hoping to negotiate a great price. Having spoken to them they have offered 10% off list price and will substantially reduce the cost if I get a good few numbers.

You can get photos of the day etc.

If you want to come along then pop your name down here or PM me. Any takers?

Karen and i both did it at Donnington about 4 years ago, although i enjoyed the day i felt it was a hell of a lot of money for 3 very short sessions on track, it didnt help that the blades were also out and you had to slow down/move over whilst they were lapping .
Your speeds were limited too, the instructor controlled the speed.

Heres Karen on the day, she improved her time a hell of a lot by the end of the day but i didnt feel it worth the money

Cheers for the heads up Mark. Some people say its worth every penny then others say don't even bother spending the money. Couple of my mates went last month and really enjoyed it so are going again August to do the elite.
I know if there are enough takers we will be looking at £230 which I know is still a lot but better than crashing my road bike...

I guess the high'ish fee's reflective of the fact that the course is run using THEIR bikes... just imagine their insurance and bike repair costs!

Have heard good feeback on this previously (never done it myself), but that was several years ago, so can't vouch for current times.

Gotta be far less boring (and patronising!), than BikeSafe and less risky than a conventional trackday. There again, prob won't be an opportunity here to chew the fat and have a cuppa with the local traffic plod - cause that's what biking's all about... right!?

:fishing

Enjoy!

Yes I agree, I did it about 6 yrs ago at Donny and track time was poor and you couldn't push, Im not saying it was sh1t but more of a red letter day in my opinion

I'm tempted by this. Really enjoyed the Llandow track day and I think it would make a difference if you're not riding you're own bike uninsured.

Definitely can't do the 6th as I'm away that weekend, but possibly the following weekend (although wouldn't want you to rearrange on my account - I'm only a maybe at the moment). I was planning to book in to do one of the wheelie schools on 13th Aug but could always do that some other time.

When would you need to know by/when are you booking? Would you be going up and back in a day? What sort of times would you be leaving/returning?

Hey Stoods, I should have updated this thread earlier mate.
Unfortunately upon looking into the day and the reviews from other people I have decided against doing it. The fact that you get such a small amount of track time, share an instructor with somebody else and have to follow a marshalls pace just completely put me off the idea.
As a result I am planning to do a track day at Pembrey or Llandow and ask a marshall to give me some tips  :thumbsup
I will let everyone know what dates and where
