IOM
« on: June 09, 2010, 12:03:38 AM »
Been watching the nutjobs with interest this year, and Hutchingson is certainly on a mission.......

But its got me thinking.  The Superbike race, which is exactly that, full on superbikes with top notch suspension and 200+ bhp engines, slicks, and money no option. They did the lap record last Saturday of 131mph average speed.  :eek

The superstock race yesterday. Which is basically the bikes you buy from the shops stripped of all the road going shite, but the suspension remains fairly standard, engine fairly standard and non slick tyres. Hutchinson did an average speed lap of 130mph...... Thats over the 37 miles.

So the average speed difference between an all singing, all dancing Superbike compared to a pretty stock bike you could buy out of the shop, over 37 miles of that torturous course is..... 1mph

Makes me think that although the bikes may get faster in a straight line, the suspension and tyres just cannot be pushed anymore..... So when will that average speed lap record be just that...... A lap record, that will be physically impossible to break.   I dont think its going to be long tbh.

they said the same thing when the 100mph barrier was broken at the TT

"this is the pinnacle, nobody will be able to exceed this speed" etc

new technology is always coming along, although to be fair the last 10 years nothing major has really made bikes quicker, and some would argue the lack of torque on modern stuff makes them irrelevant for the road.

I reckon the lap record will keep climbing as active suspension and more electronics are created

Yeah you got a point...... But technology since the first 100mph lap just took off between then and now.  It seems thing have slowed down alot lately, with nothing radical enough coming out to really make a difference on a course such as the TT.  This year, they just seem to be out of shape going into every single corner, whereas they used to just get an 'oh shit' moment here and there.  Looking at the difference in average speeds between the Superbike and the Superstock, it just seems they cant ride that bike (superbike) with all the big suspension, electronics and sticky tyres, any harder than the, which should be, slower one.  just seems they have hit a wall as to how hard they can push the faster bikes I think.....

Or...... If you look at it from the other perspectives...... Perhaps the Road bikes are just so much better. And have bridged the gap to the Superbikes. After all, it is a road race. Its not what a superbike is ultimately built for really.

I dunno............................ Gues im just fucking bored!  :rofl

Yeah stop with the reasoned debate and serious threads, you're bringing the place down!
Get back to talking about boobies  :thumbsup

Seriously though, it speaks volumes when a 2001 GSXR-1000 is faster to 100mph from a standstill than the brand new 2010 equivalent  :eek

top end power might make good racebikes, but it's shit for the road as you never get chance to use it.

I'd love to try an 1198S or a new BMW on track to see if this new traction control is actually any good or not though

Ok............... Back on Topic shit head.... Im asking why a Superbike is only 1mph average faster than a Superstock around the TT mun......... Have the Superbikes reached the limit????

I reckon tyres are playing a big part.

The gap between full race slicks (in the superbike races) and the Supercorsas (in the superstock races) has closed right up in the last couple of years.

If you look at 10 years ago the stockers were using shitty old hi-sports or whatever they were in those days, whereas slicks have always offered decent grip.

Now the gap has closed so have the laptimes.

Also there are other factors such as similar weight of SS/SB bikes and again the gap in power has closed (superstock are 180bhp - superbikes are only 205 max) so the 1mph difference in laptimes makes sense really

Personally I dont think they would go any faster. I dont think they would be durable enough to take the punishment of the course, or economical enough to do the distance........ Otherwise they would be using them in the Formula 1 TT at the end of the week wouldn't they??  :scratch

I wonder if that is what Rossi uses when he aint on the track........................... Yamalube.  :sma

I watched a recording of SundaysMoto2 race last night. F*cking brilliant.  :eek

Like the 125 races of old with a grid full (40+) of nutters.
 :clap

Overtaking is a scream with half a dozen changes in the same corner, it's mad!  :shocked

I'm going to watch this instead of MotoGP now

Plus, I don't think any of them could possibly be  :nails so there is no chance of openly admiring the style of a  :nails

So what you're saying is that you prefer to watch 40+ men in tight leather as opposed to just 17?

Well there is more chance of a ''coming together'' and the Moto2 lads will generally be younger and more fresh faced......Not of course why I would be watching but you seem interested

i can see your point fuzz, however look at the 19 hundreds, to do 100mph in a car was not imagineable, then breaking 200mph, most family cars can do 120.....

if you see my point, ?

i do believe at the moment they are at the limit of grip. perhaps the superstock is just a very well balanced tool, having the extra horsepower on the superbike may not be useful?
Jason Palmer - BIGJ - you are already greatly missed, RIP friend.
