I Think I Deaded It !!!!
« on: May 22, 2010, 05:15:37 PM »
Well....... Cut a long story short, the Triumph motor is fucked!!!

Took the engine out today, and gave the engine bay and motor a bit of a clean.

It was then time to get down to business. So checked all the valve guides, and in a way, unfortunately they were all ok. I thought that would have been my problem.

So it was time to delve deeper. Off with its head!!!

Took the head off and found that No.1 Piston had been slightly touching the head. So that is ointing in the directin of a small end bearing / pin problem.

So....It was off with the sump to get at the bottom end and try and get the piston out.

Got the piston out, which showed where the piston had been touching the head (the silver mark on the face)

But nothing prepared us on disassembley of the piston itself. Knocking the gudgeon pin out revealed that it had snapped in half. This in turn had started to crack the housing on the piston that it passes through.

The mechanic giving me a hand said, in nearly 40 years of working on bikes he has NEVER seen this happen.  It was only on Tuesday I thought it was a cam chain tensioner problem, and took the bike up to 140 to see if the tensioner would free up a bit.... Now, thinking about it, if that piston had left the conrod, not only would that motor be fit for the scrap heap, I doubt I would be here telling you about it.  Sobbering thought tbh....

So it looks like a check on the other pistons is in order, and then set about sourcing the necessary parts, and re-building it.

But that will be after I have approached Triumph with an email, and pictures showing them this potentially catastrophic failiure!!!

Bit gutted, but it could have so much worse. Take care out there peeps.

You are one lucky fella FUZZR......if that had blown up at those speeds...we would all be having a totally different conversation  :thumb_down

I would DEFINATELY be getting hold of Triumph and getting them to explain how that has happened.... :scratch

Trading standards on the c*nts  :thumb_down

Not fit for purpose having bits go like that in relatively low mileage.
triumph need to sort out their quality control by the looks of it

PB magazine also had a D675 that had a piston failure
Not cool  :eek

Looks like it's kept you busy!!

Yeah busy doing shit I didnt want to be doing....... Looked for an email address, but 'they aint got one'... So phoned them to be answered by an Arab who couldn't understand a single thing I said, then his supervisor, who was a fuktard....

I think they must have had a bad patch of pins if thats the case mat.... Same thing happened with the RSV4 on test when it was realeased, all the cranks packed in..

Well I am going to try and persue Triumph for something. The minimum I think they should do is provide the parts to rebuild it. I dont think that would be unreasonable for me to ask for...... I will push for a new motor though!!

Anyone on here a solicitor who can write a quick letter on Fuzzrr's behalf?

Looks like a stern approach would be best as when you ask nicely these days, you get taken advantage of  :thumb_down

I'd get a letter written with words including  "not fit for purpose, dangerous, near death and litigation" in it.
Then hopefully they'll take notice

Thanks Pope..... But I'll go down the nicely softly and technical approach with them first. See what they come up with. Although I have been piling the miles on, 18,000 for a bike just over 3 years is classed as average. So they cant use the milage against me. And I will challenge any of their inspectors to come out and see if the bike has been neglected, cause anyone can see that it hasn't.

I'll try that first. Even if they supplied the parts it would be something, and would be no cost to them for a good customer relationship. See what happens with that approach, Although I am going to try for a new motor first off.

I've known con-rods to snap, usually in cars but I've never heard of a gudgeon pin going. If they are admitting there was a duff batch you've got a good case. Be positive but polite and understanding, it'll usually get you far more results than going in 'all guns blazing'. Someone 'up there' must have been watching over you for that not to have ended up far more catastrophic.

Andy.
The instructions said "Use Windows XP or greater" so I installed Linux!
A Life? Cool! Where can I download one of those?

Im going to phone them Monday. I will be polite.....as always. But I think after looking and thinking about things, they do really need to see that there was a problem there. And it is no way down to neglect on my behalf.

F*ck me gently!.....if that lot had let go at  the speeds you are talking about, there would have been some mess particularly in the underpants region.  Were that type of potential failure to be found in other motors, they would have to recall a shit-load of bikes.  If they don’t play ball you might want to talk about sending the pictures to the motorcycle press.
If you believe that load of old bollocks..........
