Email To Triumph **UPDATE**
« on: May 27, 2010, 08:53:08 PM »
Well...... See if this does any good..... If it dont, then they aint got a friggin heart!!!
-----------------------------------------
John
Here is the information and pictures that Mark at Triumph UK requested. I have enclosed pictures of the defective parts, and also some of the bike itself. They should give some idea of the general condition the bike has been kept in.

I would also like to give some background on the mechanic who did the services out of the warranty period. He has been in the motorcycle industry for the last 40 years building, repairing and servicing motorcycles from all disciplines. He has personally supplied and built race bikes for the Isle of Man, and has had finishes in the top ten at one point.  I seriously would trust this guy with my life, and I do not question his competence and knowledge as regards to servicing all the bikes I have owned.  In the last 10 - 11 years of owning bikes of various ages, not once have I ever had anything let me down that has been directly involved to the servicing.  The service carried out was done using genuine Triumph parts. And I don’t see any reason why this service, even if it was done wrong in some way (which it wasn't), would contribute to this failure.

My background involves being in the engine component manufacturing industry for the last 16 years. I qualified as a tool maker and progressed into the Quality Department in a multi national bearing company.  My job now involves implementing & monitoring processes in the manufacturing of forged, turned, ground and polished components.  Also, I am involved in the inspection and analysis of components that have been identified as concerns. Due to this knowledge, and some other impartial advice, I believe that there could have well been a defect in the manufacture of either the pin itself, or the oil hole in the conrod.  I realise it is very difficult to prove either way. But looking at the marks on the small end of the conrod, it indicates that the sheer is right in line with the oil hole. I am wondering if a burr may have been present after this rod was machined, and it may have weakened the pin from the start.

I have owned the bike since February 2009. I bought it from Three Cross Motorcycles with 3,000 miles on the clock. It had two services done at the shop there, and the others carried out at the specified intervals, by my trusted mechanic.  As it was out of warranty, and didn’t think I would be claiming for anything on this scale I could not see a problem with that.  Honda and Suzuki stated on their service books that as long as the work was 'carried out using genuine components, by a competent VAT registered mechanic', then the warranties would be upheld.  I was unaware that your service instructions were different, and I accept that was a total oversight on my behalf.  But at the end of the day, I have paid £5,000 for a bike that has lasted me just 15,000 miles, and lasted just over a year. I do not think for one minute that the failure of this pin is down to any neglect on my behalf, and, could be just a very unfortunate and isolated defect.

So now basically, I am unable to use my only mode of transport. I am literally begging, blagging and borrowing bikes when they are available just to get back and forth to work, also I am missing out on some of the best riding weather we have had this year, which is frustrating to say the least.  I was prepared to pay for any parts that were needed to get the motor up and running again, until, obviously I found the extent of the problem.  I have already approached a Triumph specialist and had a quote of £900 + VAT to rebuild the engine. That is the sort of money I don't have to hand, and would obviously like to sort things out using a cheaper method.

After speaking to Mark on the phone at your warranty department he advised for me to email you all the details of the bike, and the problem.

I explained to him that I could really do with some help regarding this matter. I am on many forums, and have done nothing but praise the 675 since I bought it. And the praise was genuine. The bike is an awesome tool on the road, and I have enjoyed every single mile on it. I am not lying when I say I have transformed some peoples views regarding these bikes, to the extent that one went out and bought a brand new SE, a girl I know just sold her blade and has bought one, and two more friends that I ride with are badgering me for a go on it, as they are interested after seeing mine.

I would just like to ask if there would be anyway you could help me out of, to me, this mess. If an option where parts could be supplied, and I get the motor to a Triumph dealer and pay labour, then I would be happy to talk about that.  Any other options that you could put forward would be considered obviously. Like I say, I could just do with some help on this to get me back on the road.

I await your reply.

Wow i just read this whole thread .

That is one very polite letter .

I would be very surprised if Triumph did not help you out on this after such a calm letter asking for some help from a dedicated Triumph owner .

Good luck on that Fuzzr sir. :thumb_up
