And this is part of road improvements costing £19.2m.  :shocked

When there is an accident on that stretch of road, there will be no emergency services to attend due to all the government cuts. I know which I'd rather see the tax payers money spent on!

But its ok because they have made £400k in speeding fines since Sept 09! :roll_eyes

Oh well,  it was just a matter of time before they switched those on. One thing I did notice is that not every gantry has camera's mounted on it. If you can memorise which one's you might get away with speeding - probably not worth it though !

"The cameras trigger penalty notices when the 50mph limit is exceeded."

The speed should return to 70 when there is minimal traffic on this stretch. ie late at night early morning, not remain at 50 as this is a right pain in the arse when the roads empty.

They will be moved to allow for that .

which is why its called a" variable speed limit" :thumb_up
Sensors in the road detect traffic build-ups and automatically adjust the speed limit to keep vehicles flowing.

My point is that the maximum speed is 50mph even at eg 1am when they could reset the speed to 70mph  when there is less of a build up of traffic. Which is why it's called "a right pain in the arse"

look at the welsh office web site( You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login)and you would see the following information
The 50mph limit will be removed following the
completion of the new concrete barrier (expected
in summer 2011), when variable speed limits will
take over. The 70mph national speed limit will apply
when there are no incidents and when there is no
congestion on the motorway.

does that answer your question
variable speed limit means just that , could be 20 /30/40/50/60/ NSL

Thanks for your reply. I now know what variable speed limit means.. :roll_eyes  Don't think I really asked a question, just merely responding to the thread. But thanks anyway....... :tup2

Have you noticed the variable speed limit signs  at brynglass tunnels going east,

The 50 mph signs are now down along with the old yellow lollipop cameras, the new variable gantry signs are switched off,

People! this now means its 70mph so why is nearly everybody still bloody traveling at 50mph, talk about brain washing and not having the ability to read signs :wheelchair

If you notice there is one camera for each lane and are bracketed permantly to the gantry's, with the other gantry's with no brackets.  But that's not to say that they will put more cameras on other gantry's in time as what happened on the M25 using the same system.  There are two gantry's West bound and two East bound with the cammeras on. :thumb_down :thumb_down :thumb_down
