If its true, its wrong...
« on: May 02, 2011, 08:34:34 AM »
When speaking to a retired traffic cop recently, we got onto the subject of "Radar Guns"...

I asked him if he was sat in a hedge (as they often do) pointing his Radar gun at a car and for example, the gun showed a speed of 85mph in a 60mph limit, is that simply enough evidence to report the driver with intent of prosecusion?

He said "yes it was"...

I then asked him, whats to stop him from pulling a biker over 10 minutes later and showing the rider the same gun with the same reading from the previous offending car?

He said "Nothing"... :eek

He went on to say its very hard to get a reading on a Radar gun from the front of a bike. Due to the bikes size and shape, the gun struggles to catch the returning beem, which is required to calculate the closing speed.

If this is bullshit and he's winding me up, then fair cop guv...

On the other hand, if this is actually as straight forward as it sound, maybe you should put this question to the Judge next time your in court, but I would suggest you seek professional advice before hand...

Ride safe... :scooter

Jason...

Jason...
I dont know about the (very expensive)Guns the police use but the one that i use for mod1 which cost under £100.00 seems to work very well ,
I think that the gun used now is not a radar operated one but uses a laser beam so i supose it depends on when he retired

Accuracy
Laser is a very accurate system, with a speed acquisition time as little as 0.3 seconds. T his is the reason laser guns are being used rather than the old-fashioned radar guns, which found it hard to determine which car was the target. There are various types of laser equipment in use, but all currently use the same 904nM light beam.

Heard the one about the speed cop operating his radar gun, a low flying jet goes by & he points his radar gun at it for a bit of fun & gets a reading of 500 mph. Meanwhile pilot,s cockpit warning lights up as if he has been missile locked. He nearly let off a sidewinder missile in defence.
Must be true.

A sidewinder is a heat seeking, short range air to air missile I think, so it'd do naff all against a laser or radar based ground installation.

Indeed you are correct.... The sidewinder will target onto a major heat source. So really speaking, it wouldnt latch onto the radar gun......... But it would latch onto the copper! As we all know, the bollocks most of them spout is a load of hot air!!!  :roll_eyes :thumb_up

If they are not used properly
as per
A speed camera boss has finally admitted his equipment is capable of getting speeds wrong if guidelines are not strictly followed

And what guarantee do we have that the guidelines are followed ? - don't even need a second plod to corroborate the reading these days.

A policeman is seen as a trusted individual perhaps? As with any case it is down to the evidence produced. It's your word against theirs.
