I was stopped in the car early on Wednesday morning for speeding, luckily I was only given a caution. I was caught doing 40 in a 30 by a policeman with a laser gun on road from Pontyclun to Miskin. I was approaching the rear of a van at the time and when the van pulled off left at a mini roundabout I saw the policeman take aim. I got my speed down to well within the limit but was waved over. Got the full-on talk etc... but luckily no points or thankfully a speed awareness course. Now the same policeman was standing in exactly the same spot this morning but this time without the laser gun. As I passed he just gave me a wave, what a nice man. Going to start taking an alternative route from now on!!!!

I have to agree that the latest purge for the speed scameraships are little to do with road safety and EVERYTHING to do with revenue raising. Since the recession, it is a surefire way of raising much needed monies for the authorities.

Near me we have a three lane road running up a hill (the centre lane is a crawler lane to avoid slow moving heavy vehicles)
approaching it downhill, you come out of a 40mph around a corner and the scamera van parks at the bottom of the hill catching those who don't slow down from the 40 mph quickly enough. There are hardly any pedestrians as it is an industrialised area, not residential.

There have been hundreds of motorists caught lately doing as little as 34 mph, and those who have not been offered a "speed awareness course" within the last 3 years are being offered one at £85 a shot, AND FOR 34 MPH straight out of a 40 mph!

What has that to do with road safety?

Lukily for bikers at this location, this is a forward facing scamera van, so they cannot do the bikes coming toward them and any who get caught going up the hill after passing them deserve all they get ! ;)

Beware of that.
They'll clock your speed approaching and then take your number as you go past, some are equipped with video cameras for that. They also actually do good trade by clocking vehicles taking off in the distance when they think they're safe.

Had a chat with one of the safety van operators once, at a show. There are cameras in the vans facing front & back & also one on the side if anyone approaches " for a word ".

A good friend of mine is a Traffic Sergeant in charge of the Gwent Scameraship dept in the "secret" location that they keep the vans. (I know where it is, but I am sworn to secrecy.)

He told me that the photographic evidence presented to the court MUST record the offending speed together with the index number of the vehicle for it to be admissible, which is why the scamera vans cannot do bikers travelling toward them even if they see the index number at a later stage.

In the circumstances that this van is used at the particular location, the camera is trained up the hill, and any rear facing camera would be useless because no one in their right mind would be speeding after seeing the van coming down the hill.

Any rear facing cameras could only catch out those idiots on bikes who don't realise that the van might have a camera facing the other way and carry on speeding.

Incidentally, the "rules" of engagement state that an operator can only operate one camera at a time, the cameras do not record speed automatically and have to be "targetted" by the operator on the "offending" vehicle, therefore 2 cameras operated simultaneously would require two operators!

Not sure who your traffic sergeant friend is but i have the summons and the legal advice and the speed awareness course that contradicts that view. It was on a sunday last year, empty road and forward facing camera in a van, no contest no excuse number noted down by the van operative who if needed will make a sworn statement. Legal advice was very unlikely to get away with it and to take the fine/course if offered and told definately not to go to court as the points could well be increased.

Pro-tip: If you're riding along and you approach a camera van and you think you've been clocked, brake to a stop immediately.

Dismount and push the bike backwards until you're out of sight, then turn around and ride away so the operator/cameras never see your number at all.

Not recommended on the motorway :rofl

Alternatively, point the front wheel to the sky and wheelie past ;)

If you contest the case and ask for photographic evidence and in that photographic/video evidence your index number is not visible then it will be thrown out by the magistrates as inadmissible  (if the Scameraship don't withdraw the case at that point knowing this)

The threats made of points and heavy fine are enough to disuade most from contesting it.

Apparently, it is one of the most common defences sucessfully used by expensive lawers like MR Loophole!

Just lean backwards and cover your plate with your hand :thumbsup How do they suppose to identify you then? Anyone can be wearing a red jacket and blue helmet on a white bike (for example) :thumbsup
