I've never really had a problem with FIXED speed cameras  :scratch

The reason they're being scrapped (I imagine) is simply because they don't catch enough people.
Drivers who drive regular routes know where they are and slow down so they're probably not making enough money

The real moneymakers are the scamera vans or coppers with speed guns as they move about so you never know where they're going to be  :nono

I'd be in favour of MORE fixed speed cameras as long as they got rid of the Talivans and coppers with speed guns

+1

Never had an issue with the fixed ones myself. They are hard to miss.

Vans is despise and you will always have coppers with speed guns hiding in bushes.

I'm more concerned about the increased use of unmarked bikes and cars. They worry me.

:i_agree I heard they were cutting funding under the coalition government and if local councils wanted to fund them then they could....which they dont. I dont like them, I dont believe they do anything to really improve road safety unless they are in built up areas around schools/playgrounds/parks etc, but they very rarely are.

I'd personally rather see ALL static and mobile speed cameras scrapped in favour of ANPR ones and actual police who could use discretion to acertain whether the speed or manner of your driving/riding was in fact dangerous!

another thing ive noticed is how much the police rely on ANPR.         its so easy to clone another plate and youll rarely get pulled

There is that...but, if the plate has been reported as stolen or has been confirmed as cloned..which does happen....drive offs etc, doesn't take much investigation..it gets sent to ANPR...albeit the owner gets pulled once or twice, but they don't tend to mind to be fair....

ANPR also checks tax , insurance , mot and all sorts of stuff..no getting away from it...... :thumbsup

And to be honest , the guys who are in ANPR don't tend to bother with things like visors, cans & small plates..they get read 99.9% of the time anyway...they are after the bigger things like drugs etc........ :thumbsup

One question comes to mind...

If the GATSO's were turned off, how did the council record an 88% increase in motorists speeding past them...???

speeding offences may have gone but has the accident rate gone up as well , there seems to be no evidence put forward for that ,the only reference is as follows
However, initial statistics from the Swindon experiment showed a fall in accidents to 315 casualties over the first nine months, compared to 327 the year before.
But within days of the switch-off locals complained motorists were ignoring the redundant cameras and flouting the speed limits

probably the same locals who would quite happily pass other peoples houses above the posted limit,
