Honda's new bike?
« on: June 11, 2011, 06:52:45 PM »
Honda Crossover/Crossdresser

I'm  bit confused as to what it wants to be?
Looks ok, review rates it as a bit of a back road blaster, 100bhp but 240kgs wet, hmmm

No good god no pete, next year, new bike will be a ktm 990 either the sm or smt-t but still toying with the idea of a trundler for two up and a smaller sumo for max fun one up.
Rumours are abound of KTM building a mid weight twin something like a 750 in a lightweight frame, now that would be fun  :thumbsup

No the honda just caught my eye as being a bit different and billed as a realworld bike i.e. practical on the roads around us

I'd wait for the new Honda Crosstourer, that will have the new 1200 VFR engine in it (slightly de tuned though). The Crossrunner has the VFR's 800cc engine in it which is a good engine but not in the 1200 league. The reviews of the Crossrunner also state that the pegs are set high to the seat which makes it uncomfortable after 100 miles which is not much of a rec for a touring m/cycle imho!.  :thumb_down

Popped into Thunderroad, B-end, yesterday morning for a road test on this. :thumbsup
At the moment I share a car lift to Bristol daily but the lucky barstool is going to retire in 6-12 months so do I return to the train, rather not coz of the time taken :thumb_down, or drive.
Remember my current bike is a 1980 XS850 Triple 4 stroke shaft drive :thumbsup.

As god was getting up and showering I climbed on the machine, ideal to see what it is like in rain and wind (nearly all bikes are good to ride in sunshine). For all its weight it was very light to the feel. Pulled out on to the road after hitting the horn (indicator and horn buttons swapped over). The indicator was standard Yam - push to cancel - with out auto cancel. Pulled well in first - not sporty but not what I want. Headed trough town, up to jnc36. Down to jnc 35, around the Pencoed ring road and on the back road to Bryncethin. Return to Pencoed - I like this bit of road- and into B-end  on the A473, through town and back to shop.

Not a long ride - 1/2 hour, but long enough in the bad weather.

Result is that I do like it. On the motorway it cruises happily at 75mph but does not really like anything faster. Top gear is definitely an overdrive. To overtake safely I had to drop a cog. Handling is very good for the bike. The cross winds hardly affected it at the speeds I did. Around town it is nimble and quick to turn. Again the problem I had was it did not like pottering below 2000 revs - I could hear and feel the chain complaining. This could be because the last chain driven bike I had was a long time ago.

Overall, for my needs, it seems a capable machine with a good economy. Very comfortable to ride, legs hardly got wet - even on the motorway, the little wind shield worked well and I had no noticeable head buffeting.

Will I buy - not yet as I need to try a few alternatives and as I have the time I will. Apparently there are rumours of Yamaha bringing out a completely new range next year ( no, not new paint scheme and price hike).
but my right elbow got heavier
