I don't think lrory drivers are worse than anyone else... But they scare the bejesus out of me when they get things wrong!! I mean, I don't know how much a lorry weighs, ten cars? Christ I wish they'd take more care when manuevering around the narrow lanes we have in this country.

It would be nicer to rebuild the rail network and trasnport more things that way - no need for thousands of huge lorries on the motorways, damaging it and bumping up our road tax. As things stand though, a necessary evil perhaps? Get rid of vans though!  :tt

Now as for busses... Get those flu virus-transporting lunchboxes out of the way! We've got enough diesel dumped on the road already!  :taz

*EDIT* spelling  :sweat

This country will grind to a halt if you had your way by the sounds of it  :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl

Not at all! Trains will replace lorries using less fuel and wear 'n' tear, state-sponges won't be able to bus to the job centre, and there will be free-flowing traffic, no-one is late and fewer accidents, what a saving! :tup2

A few things you may have to think about there mate.
1. If trains will replace lorries, how would you get goods to the shops, fuel to garage fore courts and so on.
2. A railhead would have to be built in every major town and city to accommodate these trains. Would you like one in your town running 24/7.
3. Look what happened when there were leaves on the track, or the wrong type of snow.
4. There would be white vans every where.

Those are good points, but I do think that, if you needed to get lots of things from Dover to Glasgow, for example, it would be cheaper (and quicker?) on a train than a couple of lorries, so maybe trains would alleviate the roads that little bit?

Also, trains don't generally cut up / slow up motorists, unless said motorists are really lost  :rofl

White vans do smell, but lorries could still be used from these new freight train stations to the local area. It would simply remove the long-distance mega-ultra killer lorries from the motorways, which would be nice :thumbsup

This would also free up the lorries - perhaps to be used to sneak illegal immigrants OUT of the country? :rofl

The answer is clearly Zeppelins ( filled with Helium, for a laugh ) & barges drawn by horses ( just think what they could do for your rhubarb ).
Goods could be moved from distribution centres to point of sale by large vacuum tubes ( remember them in shops ).

Cars could be wind powered. Just think of the fun to be had tacking from one side of the motorway to the other, there could not be any middle lane hogging. You could not tailgate either as the wind would be taken from your sails.

Must go now ... time for the medication nurse.

even if you had enough rail heads in the country how many vans would it take to get the goods from the rail head to say your local supermarket, each artic Carry's approx 29TONS how much will the little white van carry, you will have a very long line of white vans trying to put the goods into the store, you wont have any room to park your cars when you go shopping, that is if you ever get to the store,s with so many little vans causing total gridlock  :tt

railheads could work. We just need to rethink things. Deliveries during the night, the goods wagons could be designed to fit onto transit chassis or larger vehicles as required. Minor rail lines could transport to smaller rail heads.

All this was proposed for Doncaster a few years ago but was shelved for some reason

I do understand that a lot of the problems are caused by the haulage company not giving enough time to drivers. Computers to roye plan should be a guide. At least the law has changed because now the planners have shared liability.

but my right elbow got heavier

Deliveries during the night you say. A lot of areas ban night time deliveries due to noise. I can't see that happening.
The Doncaster thing was shelved due to the cost
It is not the haulage company not giving drivers enough time, it's the like of tesco and Asda demanding just in time deliveries.
What law is that?

About a year ago I saw something on BBC news regarding shared liability.

You can not completely blame the supermarkets, your industry is willing to bend to their demands.
As for night deliveries, yes there will be places it is impractical but a lot could be serviced.
Like I implied, attitudes must change.

The original post was about the bad driving I encountered on motorways. Still happening. this time putting me in a dangerous position in roadworks by speeding, Irish left hooker. Had one overtake me on the M6. I was doing 70 in the middle lane when it went past in the 3rd lane.
but my right elbow got heavier

Not sure about that law but I do know that traffic planners are supposed to plan a drivers work around the hours that the driver is able to legally work. With regards to the super markets, it's  all about supply & demand, the consumer demands it, the super market supply,s it therefore I have to deliver it. Anyway, back to your original post, I wouldn't be surprised if said Irish wagon was driven by an east european.

Just out of interest do the Irish really drive left hookers? I live in Pembroke and witness loads of them driving to and from the ferry but haven't seen one yet. :scooter
