On a pushbike I trained myself to use only the front brake for all of my braking, what you want is your front brake applied to the point where if you applied it any more the front would lock then you apply the rear to again the point where if you applied it any more the rear would lock.

Also just like to add this - Firstly if you apply the front brake 'til it nearly locks, then apply the back brake 'til it nearly locks, then the back brake has shifted a little more weight to the front tyre, which you can use for even more front braking! :thumbsup The way I think about it is the back brake's main purpose/bonus is letting you brake harder with the front brake without locking it up. Someone tell me if I'm wrong though (before i crash the thing! :tt).

thanks all, some great advice on braking for a newbie like myself. When I did my cbt the instructor didn't mention the back brake, just told me to use my engine/gears to slow down then my front brake gently, and i find that i am still learning when to use the back brake. This helps a lot!   :thumbsup

I'm a new rider myself but I was taught to use the back brake as a stabiliser only. I.e like has been said above to shift weight off the bars and plant the bike under heavy braking or when doing slow manoeuvres  bit of back brake to stabilise your speed. Only other time (i think) is if mid corner you need to slow down. Although realistically you should learn to practice setting the correct approach speed into the corner with the correct gear and position so you don't need to brake and can just throttle off.
Having said that forward planning is something I struggle with.

Agreed on using the back brake for stability under braking. I learned that to become an all round good motorcyclist you use 80/20 front to back in the dry and up to 60/40 in the wet, which makes sense coz if you're riding on the loose you use even more back brake and even no front or you'll lose the front, as we probably all did on pushbikes as kids.

Valentino Rossi is one of the GP riders who uses his back brake a lot and he's one of the best of the late brakers, if it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me.
