Overheating?
« on: April 08, 2011, 10:42:30 PM »
Bit of an interesting one this. Couldn't find this through the search, so hopefully no-one else has had this problem!

The last two days my bike has broken down in the same place while riding home from work. I travel around 17 miles along 50mph roads and lanes, and on the way back near the Ship Inn in Caerleon, while waiting in traffic, the engine struggles for a moment then cuts out. It will always restart, but quickly stall again.

Yesterday I called the AA man out who couldn't find anything wrong with it, and I didn't notice anything untoward today, apart from the engine being SUPER hot to the touch! After 50 minutes' waiting in the pub with a coke, it started and rode fine the rest of the way home.

Does this sound like an overheating problem? It makes it 15 miles back, just the last couple through traffic that kills it! Luckily it's due for a service tomorrow, so will hopefully get some answers there! It's a 10-plate Honda CBF 125 (air cooled engine)

Cheers guys!

Sorry I've not got a clue but if they do find something on the service please tell us as it might help others.

Hi I have a CBR 125 which has a similar engine so i may be able to help, Firstly disconnect your fuel tank and have a check of your air filter, making sure its not clogged. My CbR does not like slow moving traffic and constant stop-move-stop. I have got in the habit of turning the bike off and using my feet to propel myself, not good road sense but better than the pbike packing up on me, the advantage i have is that mine is both air and liquid cooled

Interesting about the air filter, I've noticed it's struggling to hit 65mph indicated, whereas when it was shiny-new it would cruise quite steadily at 60-65... Not sure I want to be playing with it too much though, as it's under warranty til June 2012! The guy at the shop today reckons it sounded like a worn plug, hopefully it'll get sorted today! Cheers for the advice though! Maybe I should turn it off on the downhill sections eh?  :tt

Aye perhaps, the new CBF125 has a rev counter for 2011 - straight swap methinks? Hehe I'll wait and see what the Honda people say later today, picking it up at 3pm  :cheers

Nope, must just be the design of the buggers, the Honda people couldn't find anything wrong :( On the plus side the Rover got through its MOT, bless it's socks! Only had to trade my arm and leg to get it through :P

you say its been the last 2 days ,have you travelled the same way since you have had the bike, if so we have had hotter days than this, so that would possibly rule out overheating

Hi,
Ive just recently bought a cbf125 also and about 3weeks ago I thought I was going to break down after having the bike just over a month.I had been out to Usk from Cwmbran on a warm day just whizzing around as you do,and the bike kept jerking and stalling on me.Had to keep stopping and starting to get near home then all of a sudden on the bypass it was cured.Had a service a few days later and they couldn`t see what it could have been.Had it back now for a week or two no problem until Sunday just gone had a very small quick blip when the bike jerked just once at 60mph but then ok,nothing since??? Will carry on and hope it`s just a clog or something that will clear but if it happens again I`m definately taking it back to get it sorted.I don`t have any experience of bikes but surely this isn`t right???
Cheers,Paul.

p.s There was mention at the garage that my oil was low,but after the service and clean re-filled oil it still happened on that Sunday,so rules that out I would guess ;-)
