Observation
« on: May 16, 2011, 06:26:37 AM »
You see what  your eyes show you right...no wrong. You see what your brain interpretes of the info your eyes give it. That's why SMIDSY s happen. ( sorry mate I didn't see you ). ie drivers eyes saw you but brain did not register.
Try this. Look at a street scene or anything for two seconds. Close your eyes ( no not while riding ) & describe to yourself what you saw. Open again & count all the things you missed & you realise that it is impossible to take everything in.
When riding at any speed your brain cannot take in all the info your eyes give it & must be selective.
This is when hazard scanning comes in. Get your eyes to give the brain only the info about hazards. Do this by constantly scanning for anything that might be a threat to you.
Eg. Look as far ahead as you can to give as much warning as possible.
Look at rd surfaces to see if they are shiny, full of gravel, potholed etc.
Road signs are there to give info use them.
Vehicles at junctions. Eye contact, wheels turning , adjust your position & speed.
Scanning means keeping your eyes & head moving to get the best info to give your brain enough relevant info.
At the end of a ride give yourself a debrief & ask yourself what the good & bad points were & what you learned.

Re: Observation Does this Help ?
It is always difficult to try and get people to change their way of riding as a lot of riders fail to recognise there is a world beyond the front wheel.  To help with the variation of focal length needed to assess hazards when riding I refer to distance observation as 'Main Beam' and near observation as 'Dipped Beam'.  It does seem to work.

I think this is what the Hazard Perception part of the test is all about. But I didn't find the DVD guides to be very helpful.. I'm not sure that it can be taught formally, but needs to be gained by experience.
(Regarding road surfaces, most around South Wales are now so badly pitted that it's difficult to spot any specific problem - gravel, diesel, pothole etc - among the general. Just have to assume that all bends have poor surfaces, and ride accordingly.)

:i_agree Goucestershire roads are terrible too  :taz  :taz ,..... the main road through where I live was resurfaced about 3 weeks ago and it is already breaking up ...
You just need to be very aware of your surroundings and what is happening in them ..

"Nude or half nude women enjoying sex with male inmates on motorbikes are the major source of accidents throughout the world as you can witness in the picture.
Besides, the people in their surroundings could also become victim due to the diversion of their attention to the private parts of sexy women.
Motorcycle accidents are a very special and severe problem in the world.
The fatalities due to motorcycle accidents are approaching five thousand per year, and have the prospect of further increase unless effective countermeasures are instituted.
At present time motorcycle accidents account for proximately ten percent of the total traffic accident fatalities, but the motorcycle is only one to two percent of the vehicle population on the street in traffic."
