I tend to just use a chain, disc lock and have my little under seat alarm on it and it has an immobiliser on it already.

If the thieves go at it and get it then i'd rather have the insurance payout than the bike back. I'd hate not knowing what they had done to it if I got it back, would never be the same.

Some great answers here, thanks. Im most interested in protecting a bike when it's out of garage (trip, work etc), and you really made it more clear to me than before asking. But I am wondering if protection devices that you can buy (alarms) are really safe? I mean - thieves can know this devices and know how to get rid of them?

Thieving little scrotes will get around anything given time, I had 2 d locks, front and back, he got through the front with bolt cutters but I spooked him doing the back, he was making a racket lol. And the little shit could run like a whippett. I got an alarmed disc lock now, noisy stuff us good. Hope it keeps the twats at bay.

Hey, returning back to old thread (didn't want do start a new one :) ) I was doing some research before buying first bike, saw some great machines and now I start to feel like getting a chopper instead of sports bike ;) At first I was looking at Yamaha Virago and Honda Shadow, but now I like this You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login (site here), i would like to buy the 750cc one. As this will be my first bike, isn't the 750cc a little to "strong"? I was thinking also about getting something smaller, but I would like to ride with a passanger sometimes so I have a dilemma now ;) What do you think?

Going on your last post, My 1st Big bike was a Suzuki Bandit 600, it was a good bike, 2 up no problems, although It was stolen from my Garden and we found it, besides that it coped with everything, covered 28,000 miles in 3 years.

:i_agree a second hand bandit 600 is ideal for a first bike, and you will get a decent one for 3 grand.  It has a very smooth engine / gearbox, reliable as hell, cheap to run, but it still has 70bhp for when you get a bit more confident - at the same time it won't rip your arms out of their sockets either.  :thumbsup
Just my opinion but the Honda looks a bit under-powered - 27 bhp - when you get more confident you might get bored with that and be looking for a bigger bike sooner than you think.

get an alarmed disk lock. something that make a hell of a racket (100 dB +)
also i'd like to fit one that flashes really bright lights with the alarm (like 200 lumens + )

that'd scare any pikeys away.

also leave the country for 6-10 years and return and tell people you joined the French foreign legion (a few scars, burns should complete your look as long as you've hit the gym) and act a little unstable and aggressive in public. people wont want to risk stealing your bike.

agree with a bandit good allround bike the naked one easy to work on, on the down side quite a heavy bike but great for commuting or ride outs, use mine every day for work, and most w/ends for pleasure.more than happy with it.

Not letting them see it is best deterrent . failing that lights and noise . plenty of sensor lights and motion detection alarms available these days. Maplins has a few.
A baby monitor can be useful in some situations.  Managed to interrupt an attempted theft of my bandit 1200 and got out in time to see the perpetrator who was known to me.   That made for an interesting night in the pub a few days later :thumbsup

hey again ;)
Haven't bought my bike yet... I'm now thinking more about choppers, rather than sports bikes.
Anyone drives Virago? I'm looking here You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login and some of them (those with pictures) look pretty nice! I am wondering if I should look at 535 or 750 for a first motorcycle? I am a little worried that 750cc will be too powerfull, but on the other hand, I am worried that 535 won't be enough... ;)

Try before you buy .... what you think you like, might not actually be what you are comfortable on ... At the very least sit on the bike your wanting ..and with your gear on ...it makes a differance..... Also depending on finances, think about insurance costs ect  :tup2  :tup2
What every you buy ride safe  :thumbsup
Bikes don't leak oil',.... they mark their territory :o)           Sometimes it takes a whole tankful of fuel before you can think straight. Growing old is manditory... but growing up...well that my friends...is OPTIONAL!
