I have to say, I wasnt shown hill starts either, but remembering my car test to get the biting point seemed the way to go, and keeping on the back brake til ready to move
Works for me, and im up and down hills daily. Lots of practice lol.

Hi I know what you mean, I have a big problem with hill starts, you need to use the back brake, as previously stated, and plenty of practice. we just come back from touring France with the local motor club and the lead rider, who Iwas following got lost and we stopped on a hill at a junction and needed to turn right,me not getting this riding on the other side of the road!!! and found myself faced with two of my pet hates,  hillstart and turning into a sharp right hand turn (on a hill)i just switched the I just froze.
bike off and sat there!!! as I was the only female rider with 20 bikers I sat there until someone came to me rescue!!!!!  :scooterH

I have to say, hill starts the rear-brake way is something I never really cracked.
There are a couple of other options; if your bike is light enough and the hill not that steep, jam your right foot on the ground
with your shin against the foot-rest. You can hold the bike from rolling back like this (raise your own weight in the air a touch to help).

Another way is to put your right leg way back with the knee locked straight; this will hold a bike from rolling back as well.

In the real world the front brake will hold just about anything with a little practice, accelerating away just as you release the brake. The instructors may not like it but I always thought it looks a lot better than falling in a heap in the road.
The days of the brake pads shooting out backwards is long gone - I've managed to survive without that happening anyway; never heard about it happening to anyone else either.

IMHO, there's far too much made of hill starts, I always found them completely instinctive.

All well and good to say to use the back brake but in some cases on hills at traffic lights the road gradient on the left makes it impossible for a short rider to put left foot down without tipping the bike, and so right foot has to be used to steady the bike! good control of hill start  using front brake then has to be used! but agree most other times use back brake!!! :thumbsup

most hills, I manage to automatically use the front brake.  But on very steep hills, use the back brake, when I then have to THINK about it (hard work) .. and make sure i stop at a spot where my left foot can reach (preferable both feet)

Or wear platforms :)

I use back break but I think it gets pretty intuitive fast, I've gone a few months without using my back brake when I had a bent foot pedal. Just used clutch control and my front brake.

1st Gear, back brake, lots of revs, little bit of clutch, release the brake when the bike's nose starts to rise slightly (anyone ever get taught this when driving? A very nice way of putting it I think) as the Stig said.

Good luck!  :thumbsup

o and forward planing

i ride 60 mile round trip a day to work
roundabout ,lights and all
i try not to stop and put feet down just keep bike moving.

Cheers everyone, this has come in handy for when I start riding as I live on a massive hill and every other road around me is either a hill, a massive hill, a mountain or something close to a cliff. For some of the hills around here, I've already heard the best advice available on here.......... "Go another way" hahahaha.
Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, "where the heck is the ceiling?"
