First big bike!!
« on: May 06, 2011, 11:17:36 PM »
Hey all! Can you hear that thunder out there tonight?  :tnp

I've got my mod 1 booked for June, and mod 2 in July!! So hopefully sometime towards September I'll be out looking for a full sized bike!! (restricted to 33bhp of course!)

I've had a cheeky ride of my dad's 650 Bandit down the road, and the power is a completely different kettle of fish from a 125! :scooter (Even at 31 mph :tt) I like the look of the SV650f, and after a bit of research, and even bearing in mind its shortcomings, I'm really tempted by some of the 2nd hand prices around. I was also considering the GSX650F, but although I'm sure it's a lovely bike, it looks like a fat Cyclops on wheels!

(also bearing in mind that the SV is a twin-cyclinder, and I hear it's better to restrict, and sounds nicer too!)

Any thoughts / recommendations? What was your first big(ish) bike?

Don't think you'll go far wrong with a sv matey. Maybe also consider a gazer 600! :thumb_up

Cheers, the SV does seem to split opinions somewhat! What with insurance etc and only being a lil 'un (21 this October!) It has to be cheeeep!

I was considering a Ninja 250 or that new CBR250R, but to be honest, I think I'll be bored after 2 years and looking to buy again... Whereas I can just take out the restriction of a bigger bike! (After the two years of course  :tt)

What about a little 400. I had a ZXR400, which was bloody lovely.... Don't go for a Ninja 250, they're expensive, pretty expensive to insure (when I was quoted, anyhow) and you will be bored in no time.
Or stick to an SV, as Ninja said, can't do much wrong there  :thumbsup

A 400 you say... hmm interesting, do they still make 400s?  :tt I'll certainly have a look, it might just be a case of sitting on a few different bikes 'til I go 'ahah!'

I'm so frustrated that I have to wait 'til July - I'm sure I could take the two tests tomorrow and Sunday, but the ones I've booked were the only slots I can make  :bore Anyone wanna swap a slot?  :tup2

most of my mates that have passed on a restricted licence chose the sv650 with the plug in ecu....great all rounder.
But if your age permits have you concidered the DAS? it provides alot more training and will help you alot with real life experience!

thats gonna be my choice of bike after my das. (got my cbt tomorrow lol) one of the japanese 400's , they are lovely bikes nice and low ride height, very cheap insurance (for me i'm 33) but i believe it's classic bike insurance thats why it's cheap.

can pick up some restrictd to 33bhp if not easy to do,

and i love the 80's look lol...
if it aint on ,it aint on

Insurance might be a bit steep for me on that machine :tt

Aye, I saw a SV650 at Thunder Road yesterday (it's on autotrader) it was the 'S' with the fairing, but not quite a full fairing covering the engine, didn't look right at all, very strange. Love the full faired look though  :thumbsup

A plug-in ECU, you say? That sounds like an easy install  :thumbsup
