Well I'm racking my brain trying to decide what my first Big Bike should be after my DAS.

I would love something like an R6 or a CBR 600 RR or similar. What are your experiences with 600's after passing the DAS?

BTW I've got a new YBR 125 at the moment and have put 300 miles on it and feel I need a little bit more poke already but I'm seriously learning every day on it and love it. Just sometimes in certain conditions I wish I was on something bigger already.

Walk before run and all that...........

Hey,
I had a ybr125 for a year before upgrading to a bigger bike. Put about 4000 miles on it from new in that year and learnt a lot (I think) about riding. I wouldn't rush the upgrade. Although it does feel safer being on a bike with the power to get you out of a sticky situation. In my experience most people tend to head for a 600 as first big bike. Beads had a cbr6rr and seemed to find that fine but personally I wouldn't recommend a full on sports bike as first bike - save it for later. (Sports bikes not as comfy to ride and those fairings will be expensive to replace if/when ya drop it.) Wedge had a cbf6 and seemed to have learnt a lot on that bike. Using those guys as an example because they came to mind  :sma
I cant really recommend anything other than the street triple on a personal basis as it is my first big bike - you don't have to look very far to find 5* reviews of them. Have a look at bikes such as the kawa er-6f or suzuki gsxf650 if you want a bike that looks sporty but with cheaper insurance and more upright seating position.

I learnt on a YBR too, cracking starter bike and you think you are ready for more power now but you've only just scratched the surface. Worry about the big bike much later, for now get loads of miles under your belt  :thumbsup

I went for a Bandit 600 after passing my DAS, dropped the thing 3 times, bloody heavy! I've still got it but I did buy myself a ZX6 last month and what a difference in two 600's, so quick and responsive, right up until my talent ran out on a left hander and I hit a car head on and wrote it offthe third time I rode it  :banghead

I'm with higgy, ER6, SV650, GSXF, Fazer, for the first year  :thumbsup

Its all down to personal preference mate one mans meat is an others something or other.

Best advice I can offer is try some on for size go to some bike dealers and sit on a load of bikes all different shapes and sizes and see what takes your fancy.

See what's comfortable you may find that something unexpected flicks your switch and get some insurance quotes you have to consider running costs as well unless you happen to be minted.

Have good think about it what are you planning to use your bike for are you going on any long rides or commuting if so you might want something more upright for comfort.

Or If your just out to have some fun on the weekends then buy accordingly.

Its your money and your choice people may say the r6 is the dogs bollox and they would be right  or nah mate buy yourself a gsxr but they don't have to live with it you do.

Ultimately do what makes you happy and enjoy it.

One cautionary tale though I worked with a lad that did his das many years ago, past first time and thought he was cool as ten bears drinking hofmeister  :thumb_up.

Went to our local dealer bought himself a fireblade and all was well.
That is until a week later when he rode it straight in to the front of the spar shop window  :oops . (Don't worry He was OK just minor injuries)

What I am trying to say is don't over estimate your ability as people have already said get some miles under your belt but most of all ride safe and enjoy.

I agree with most of the comments, so no point repeating, maybe a 650 twin would be better than a 600 sports bike, but it's up to you.

'Course I can't not mention the nutters choice  :thumbsup

All the bikes mentioned so far are good choices - except the zx10 lol. You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login

It's always a bit of a dilema. My first big one was a Bandit 600, and if you are really keen you may find yourself out-growing that sort of bike quite quickly - certaainly happened to me , I'm sure others here will agree. And also you are more likely to drop it or scratch it  in the process of getting used to it so IMO I would say get a cheaper 2nd hand 600 , get used to it , find out how keen you are, and trade up (less money to lose on depreciation cos you bought 2nd hand)   when the biking bug really gets hold of you - cos it will only be a matter of time before it does !!!

I only passsed my test in November and went straight for a big bike and from my experience you have to go sit on a few and test ride them.
I was interested in a SV650 until I sat on it and thought no way!
I ended up with a Kawasaki Z750  :thumbsup

Thanks for all your thoughts and I have seriously taken them all on board. Yes I would love a full on sports bike but I'm thinking I should perhaps go for something a bit more forgiving as a first big bike, What about an FZ 600?

I like the FZ as it looks to be less extream with a higher seating position and higher bars than a full on sports bike.

the only real choice is a Triumph Street Triple to be honest
