Bike Sat Navs..
« on: March 24, 2010, 11:15:34 PM »
I'm utterly useless at directions. I couldn't navigate my way out of a paper bag. So I'm wondering.. Do bike sat navs have an option on them to not use motorways? I'm hoping to use my bike as much as I can instead of the car and I like to do as much travelling as possible.

Sorry if it's a stupid question.

I have a Garmin Quest which is a bit old hat now, but you can programme it to avoid motorways etc. I'm guessing all sat navs have that option too??

I generally use the pc to sort out a route then you can make sure it's right before dropping it onto the sat nav.

Can anyone recommend a sat nav with decent - regularly updated and cheap subscription - Speed Camera database? Think I got done on the weekend  :banghead (in the car) and now am looking to get something to alert me to these (and would prefer it in a sat nav as apposed to a dedicated speed camera detector).

Has anyone any experience of sat nav speed camera databases? What databases are there, how often are they updated, any recomendations???

thanks in advance..

Got a garmin 550 and you can choose motorways options or not.  Also can subscribe to camera alerts on the Garmin site but its not cheap........................Or you could drive slower or ride slower.........says he with 6 points so far this year...................not happy

Cheers Hyabusa47... :sma

Hi Hyabusa47, yes could drive slower  :scratch, although (and admittedly this is a poor excuse) I was baited by the car behind (sticking on my bumper for a couple of miles and only letting me out when I approached the bend/speed camera - funnily enough he backed right off ...bastard!  :handjob).

Had a look at the garmin range and believe they use Cyclops speed camera database which is updated by garmin weekly. Don't suppose you know if you can update the speed camera database on these without subscribing to their service (i.e. copying it off another person/device who has got the update)?

I'm debating now which sat nav to go for, narrowed it down to either the Garmin or TomTom range, although I don't really want to spend much more than £100.

On a related note, does anyone know if you can upload say google map routes into these devices (i.e. create a route on google maps and upload it to the sat nav)?

thanks
Stu

My mate in work bought a cheap HP smart phone from fleaBay, which has GPS built in.

He "aquired" an up to date Tom Tom application for it along with up to date maps and speed camera database.........

He uses it in Europe too when he's on hols.

I have a TomTom Go (old now) and bought the speed camera add on at the time. It's pretty good, but I haven't updated it in a while now.

Hi Stuey

Being baited is always hard.......the other day a VW golf was going down the bypass I seen him at the r about.   As i puled off and as I went on the outside of him ( cold tyres 1/2 mile from house) the accelrated to 120.    I thought do i let him go or do i pass him.........2 seconds later and some black rubber left on the outside lane and the thought of (SMUG GRIN )i passed him carried on and pulled in a few meters later knowing i beat him.......satisfaction like having a glass of wine.....I will check to see if you can copy cameras copied from one garmin to another and let you know.   :sma
