Basic Toolkit
« on: July 20, 2011, 01:31:18 PM »
Hi there,

So my Honda PCX has arrived, very nicely in time to help me go pick up pipes for plumbing in the kitchen. The bike came with a VERY VERY basic toolkit (toothpick for a dinosaur style), so I'm looking for ideas of what would be handy to keep close by.

As it's my first bike I have decent road cover, but in the event of venturing north towards Brecon and Aberystwyth, I'd like to be able to temporarily fix a puncture so that I could get home or to town before calling in the rescue squad.

Not many people carry tool kits for road bikes ,make sure you have a set of waterproofs tucked away and always carry your breakdown card with you

A proper tyre repair kit will cost you under £15 & will be worth every penny if you ever have a puncture.

lump hammer and a condom mate !!!.....cos if you cant fix it with a hammer , ........then ....well im sure you can figure it out !!

on a more serious note..... i always have carried basic tools and they often come in handy for the bikes of friends whilst on ride outs, and my own every now and again

my supamoto has a little tailpack bolted on the back mudguard , in it is...
ty raps , tape , multi tool (leatherman) latex gloves (?) small screwdriver type 12v tester , short piece of wire 8" adjustable spanner  set of allen keys and a 1M length of plastic tube (fish tank / washer bottle type) to transfer petrol to the twat who ran out ! (carefull leaning / positioning of bikes will allow syphoning).........

and of course mobile phone and breakdown recovery ( or mate with van )......although the last one  wont fit in the tailpack .........
i used to carry a can of tyre weld , but it wasnt very effective and tyres / roads must be better cos punctures seem to be quite rare nowadays for me  ............bugger ! now i done it !...........i hope the gods let that one pass !

and there is still room in the tailpack ( 8" x 6" x 2" ) for my disc lock !

cheers all

i just ensure i take the hubby with me (and he carries all sorts of tools etc) and failing that I have breakdown cover for both bikes.

I'm also under strict orders not to touch anything - no matter how shiny or interesting it looks  :tt :tt

does my bum look big in this.....

Small screwdriver with multiple bits, pliers, tape, cable ties, puncture kit (plug type) and a couple of spanners and occasionally an adjustable spanner (if I remember to put it back under the seat.)

All fit no problem under the seat.

Bikes don't leak oil',.... they mark their territory :o)           Sometimes it takes a whole tankful of fuel before you can think straight. Growing old is manditory... but growing up...well that my friends...is OPTIONAL!

A decent leatherman multitool thing and a small reel of insulating tape, in addition to the standard kit. It's amazing how many predicaments this will get you out of.

A gas cartridge type tyre repair (just one canister, leave the rest of them behind) somewhere in the party is a good move as is membership of a recovery company.

These are all I can fit under my seat anyway so it'll have to do.

All you need is WD40 and some Duck Tape.  That way, if it moves, but shouldn't; use the duck tape.  If it doesn't move, but should; use the WD40.  (Fours years in college taught me that)!

On a serious note a puncture repair kit ( either the gel in the tyre before hand or the plug type which come with the gas cylinders to reinflate your tyre are great for a get you home fix.

Many thanks for the feedback; hopefully I can get a small kit together next week and let you know what I picked up. Useful to know that it's a 13mm I will need for my Honda. :)
