Back protectors
« on: January 25, 2010, 09:10:50 PM »
Been riding for 6 months now and have the mandatory protective jacket and trousers. hoping to put the miles in now the weather is improving but considering whether a back protector is a good investment. The jacket has knox shoulder and elbow protection but what seems like sponge padding in the back.  Anyone got experience or opinions of back protection?

Definitely get something! How much you spend or what you get is up to you! I think like helmets, get the best one you can for what you can afford! It could stop you ending up in one of these!  :wheelchair

I can no longer fit mine under me leathers (they've shrunk I think)  :innocent

But once you get used to riding with one you'll find it hard to ride without it.
Essential bit of kit and I got mine for £15 off ebay and it's a decent one

I bought mine from Aldi's :shocked for like a tenner or something. The way I see it a house brick would give more protection than that sponge crap they put in some jackets. Its the same material they use for camping mats.

I got a knox richochet 9 plate.......cost about £90 quid, wont ride without it...certainly does the job....and it's money well spent..even the wife has a back protector when she comes out as a pillion!

Like Ninja Warrior said....it's the difference between walking away a bit bruised or ending up in a wheelchair..... :wheelchair

I probably wouldnt be walking now if I hadn't had mine on on one or two occasions...... I will not ride without it if I know im going for a blatt. It aint worth the risk.

I have the knox richochet too doesnt take up to much room in ever shrinking leathers either :)

Tested the older version with the honeycome stuff inside, it crushed to absorb the impact so done its job well.

BkS have one which is worth a look too.

Wouldnt even think of getting on the bike without one on now.

I've got one inside my jacket but you've got me thinking it's not enough, are there decent ones that fit in the same pocket? I commute everyday and it's only a 10 min trip, I don't want to spend longer getting ready than I do on the road, that said safety comes first an all that.

The one that fits in the pocket in the jacket wont cover your full back down to your taily bone :)

It really takes no time at all to bung one on, your probably will spend more time looking for your keys.

Dont get caught up in the "im only going down the road" thing,  I come accross some stats once that said that your more likely to be involved in an accident within 4 miles of your house than anywhere else, cos you tend to switch of as you know the area really well.

I use a 661 back protector for motorbikes and DH mountainbike stuff.
Basically the back plate from an MX/DH pressure suit with a big kidney belt and shoulder straps.
Comfy not too sweaty and covers just under your collar to your cocycx.

They sell for about £70 but hunt around on e-bay or some other online stores and you'll find a better price.

I bought my mate the knoxx mesh jacket for his 40th, as his ribbs got bruized again (dopey studend + car..need I go on:)).

Sizes seem smaller than marked it seems, added bonus you get the protection even if youve got slightly loose waterproofs on (mate has pulled all the armour out of his codura and just puts the mesh on underneath now) use em on the road and offroad.
