« on: September 09, 2010, 08:41:15 AM »
AAAaaarrgggh  :censored - my key snapped inside the tank lock this morning before work!  I don't have another and haven't a clue what I should do next (call a locksmith out?)

Any ideas peeps?

Thanks dude - I was worried you'd say get in touch with your dealer (my model hasn't been made since 2003 and I think the closest is Italy)!

if the tank is unlocked, you should be able to unlock it with the remnant of the key and whats stuck in it. just unbolt the lock assembly from the tank( usually half a dozen allen bolts) and take it to a locksmith you may have to buy a key blank but i got one for an 05 R1 on ebay

Update:

Uh oh - this isn't looking good at all...

I took my broken key (used some tweezers to carefully fish out the other half) to a local locksmiths and he told me it was coded or chipped or something.  I looked at him in disbelief - I very much doubt that my cheap old 125 (Gilera Coguar) has the tech to recognise anything as non mediaeval as that.

Anyone have any experience with this kinda thing?

Dont you need the number to have a new one cut?  My keys came with a metal tag with a number on it which i need to take with me if i want another key cut!

The one for my car has a card with a code on it for the immobiliser etc but most basic bikes dont have immobilisers do they?

DON'T PANIC

Awesome key cutter guy in Talbot Green worked out that it wasn't really a coded one at all and just cut me a new one which fits and makes the bike go vroom.  So the whole expense was a mere £6.95 - hoozah!

(Phew!)

just in case any one has a chip in there key and snaps the ignition key
just get another one cut and keep it on the same ring as whats left and it will still work
as long as its near the ignition it will still start it
what i done with one bike and car was get some keys cut and taped the old key behind the plastics  :sma

Hahaha no I didn't!

You see the real kick yourself element of the whole thing was I was simply getting the ol bike ready to sell when this happened.  Lucky in a way it happened when it did and not after the new potential owner took it away or they'd feel seriously hard done by!

Interesting regarding having the old chipped fob on your key ring theory though - will certainly keep that in mind in eth future (as well as extra copies of my key)!
