'Clicking' noise
« on: May 22, 2010, 04:56:47 PM »
So it seems my bike has developed an interesting clicking noise...

Well, it aint that interesting really.

I first noticed it every time I pull up to stop, but on further investigation found that it:

  • Is dependant on road speed, not engine speed
  • Seems to be coming from the front sprocket sort of area
  • Seems to happen sort of once a revolution, but not 100% on that
  • Doesn't matter whether the bike is in gear, or whether the clutch is disengaged or not.
  • Doesn't sound like a bearing rumble to me

Any ideas anyone?  :scratch

Stiff link in your chain?

If it aint that it's a wheel bearing.  You got a centrestand on the CBF?

Don't think its the chain because its too regular.

Don't think its the wheel bearing either - pretty sure its coming from the front sprocket/gear box area

And no, no centre stand  :taz  :taz

Wedge, I had similar on mine for months and months and couldn't find it until i took the fron engine ocver off to look at the fornt sprocket, to say it looked like a circular saw blade would be an understatement, the clidking noise was the chain being flicked of the sprocket and hitting the inside if the casing.

If you do nuffing else Wedge me ol Mucker, HAVE A LOOK AT THE FRONT SPROCKET, sooner rather than later !!

Well I winched the arse end of her off the floor tonight to do some further investigations.  It seems to be doing clicks in sets of 3, about 3 times a rear wheel revolution.  Given that the front sprocket has 15 teeth and the rear 43, that works out roughly to one set of clicks every revolution of the front sprocket.

Both sprockets look to be in good condition, and I gave the chain a thorough clean and lube.

Took the rear wheel off, pulled the chain out the way and started spinning the front sprocket with a speed brace - no noise.

Close inspection of the chain reveals nothing obvious, so I'm not entirely sure what the noise is.  Wheel bearing feel lovely and smooth  But I'm guessing its nothing serious at the mo  :scratch

Oh yeah, found a fecking nail in me tyre at the same time  :taz :taz :taz

the nail would make a noise on contact with the road as it was wearing away
