Parrot SK4000 Bluetooth Helmet Headset
« on: October 28, 2011, 09:56:36 PM »
So I'm a fan of listening to music when on the motorway and until today I've had to choose between earplugs (safer for your hearing but no music) or earbuds (yay music, but not fantastic at blocking road noise).

Last week on a whim I was googling for the scala rider solo, a bluetooth headset that just connects to your phone or a2dp device when I came across the parrot sk4000.

The scala rider solo, best deals were surfing around the £100 mark and it didn't have fm even, that model cost more.

The sk4000 was £35.99 from amazon, brand new. (the shop had since raised the price to £49.99)

The features include:

FM radio

Bluetooth connection to phone

Bluetooth connection to a2dp device

Line in connection to non bluetooth device (great if your cellphone doesn't support a2dp)

Text to speech announcements of callers, radio stations and menus.

A wireless handlebar remote that just clips on and off.

Stereo speakers

voice dialling of numbers "call mum at home" style.

What looks to be weather proof construction (wouldn't trust it in a monsoon but every screw has rubber grommets around it and it's pretty well sealed)

Have been playing with it tonight and it works a treat, fits the usual way for these things, clamps onto the shell of the helmet.

Music can be made to go to painfully loud levels, will report back after my first ride with it tomorrow about use on the motorway.

A test call home worked fine, nice and clear, again will report back tomorrow about riding and talking.

FM radio was disappointing as I couldn't find a signal however the speaker wires are the antenna so placing them differently under the lining may improve reception, plus I know my alarm clock struggles to find a clear station in my house.

The onboard phone book navigation was interesting, using the remote you can scroll through your contacts like so

Quotes are what the unit says, + > are remote buttons.

"phonebook"
+
"a"
+
"b"
+
"c"
+
"d"
>
"Dad"
+
"David jones"
>
"cellphone"
+
"home"
>
"calling david jones, home"

It's rather quick so even if voice control fails you, it is quick to manually dial without removing your hands off of the handlebars. (remote is operated by left thumb)

The remote also operates next track, prev track (providing your music player supports a2dp), vol up/down and source (which rotates around "phone and config menu", fm radio, bluetooth audio, analog audio)

It has "auto volume control", "stereo widening", "extra bass" functions too.

Only downsides so far.

1. The unit comes with a european style adapter so requires a cheap adapter plug or just charge it using another mini usb charger.

2. In my helmet (hjc is-max flip up) I think I might need to jiggle the position of the speakers a touch as with the unit attached, speakers and my glasses on, there was a little pressure on my left ear which over a day could be irritating, also with a chin curtain on the microphone is a tight fit but it does fit.

3. The left speaker cable is not very long once you've negotiated any neck curtain you may have. Again it's specific to my helmet, but something to be aware of. The right speaker cable though is massive, my helmet is an XL and I've got about 20cm more cable than I need :)

For £35.99 though even if it turns out a bit rubbish on the motorway (again I'll report back tomorrow), it's a bargain.

Heck at £49.99 it's still £50 cheaper than it's closest rival.

My current setup has it paired with a samsung galaxy s, which operates both the phone and music options.

The "phone" source on the unit will automatically cut in over any music source.

I also use google navigation on my phone for gps, so the phone itself cuts the music it's playing and broadcasts the directions across the "bluetooth audio" source. So it's perfect for my needs.

Part two tomorrow.

Interesting read, I need to sort out an intercom for next year, my 10yr old is nagging, was going to try a cheap ebay set but I've read some crap reviews. Will be good to see how your Parrot set works out and I might have a look if they do a Rider to Pillion set up, the main choice for me at the moment is the Scala Teamset but £150 is about the cheapest I can find and I'm not sure how much he'll use it.

Keepus updated!  :thumbsup

Sadly it isn't a rider to rider or rider to pillion intercom, for rider to rider I know my mates have just used bluetooth car headsets wedged in their helmets (not my taste but it's cheap), 1 rider just calls the other.

I hadn't thought of that! He moans like hell about the fit of his lid anyway (due a new one soon) so sticking anything other than a flat earpiece will be a no no. I was hoping they could be Bluetoothed together but it seems not. Looks like it'll have to be Scala

The speakers in this are flat, but yeah unless you want to call each others phones, it won't really work for intercom. :(

"The scala rider solo, best deals were surfing around the £100 mark " Now £74 on Amazon.

Review from Amazon on the Cardo Scala Rider

The unit works fine apart from the mentioned short mic. The unit is not sold as being waterproof. A bit of a problem given our climate in the UK. Warranty claims means the unit has to be shipped back to the USA .

Been thinking of getting one myself so are you happy with the parrot is it waterproof ?

I wouldn't say it's waterproof, but when you see rubber grommets around the screws and rubberised seals on the usb socket, I think it'll withstand a little rain.

If it's a proper downpour I'd take it off, but I think it can cope with showers for short periods. i.e. getting caught out on the motorway. The clamp itself it's just metal contacts and a mic so I'd leave that on anyway.

Manufacturer however does not state anything regarding weatherproofness.

Reporting back after riding with it.

Sound - 4/5 loses some bass when going faster than 85, below that it's crystal clear fantastic audio really but that could be due to my helmet (not the quietest).

Ease of use while riding - 5/5 ridiculously easy, voice control works well for dialling even at speed, changing sources and tracks becomes intuitive after a very short period of time

Weatherproofedness - so yesterday I rode through two bouts of monsoon style rain, rain that soaked through my goretex waterproofs. For 45ish minutes in each case and at high speeds. This thing was on the side of my helmet throughout stayed working and still worked for todays rideout.

Battery life - so charged it overnight 2 days ago, yesterday it spent about an hour and a half on, playing music, made one short phone call and listened to the radio for a stint. Today about the same amount of time again listening to bluetooth audio so I'd say 3 hrs use and I've not heard the 15 minute battery warning yet.

Comfort - 3.5/5 this is probably just my problem but the hjc is-max I have fits really well, the slight indent caused by the clamp and the speakers on the left mean that when I wear glasses if I put them on properly (arms over ears) my earlobes are crushed, not unbearably but it is an annoying ache.

Without my glasses I think they'd fit properly and are probably quite comfortable.

Remote - 3.5/5 when it works it works really well. Responds swiftly and had suffered through the monsoon rain just like the head set.

However I have found it difficult to push buttons a few times, well rather it didn't seem to pick up my button pushes and required repeated attempts every now and again.

It also prevents me from pulling my clutch all the way into the handlebar, doesn't matter as it still properly disengages the transmission but does feel a little weird initially. This again could be down to me mounting it incorrectly but it's comfy where it is.

Phone call clarity - hearing them 5/5, them hearing me 5/5, no shouting required travelling 70mph call was placed using voice control first time, they thought I was standing next to a road, rather than riding on one. Will try and record an mp3 voicemail and upload it if I remember at some point.

Downside, I had music on max volume as one of my mp3s was recorded at a low volume, switched to phone mode, hit voice control and almost got deafened by the voice prompt, thankfully turning it down was quick and easy via the remote.

Overall first impressions are pretty good, worth the £35.99 I paid for it most definitely, unfortunately I've nothing else to compare it too beyond headphones and it's a hell of a lot better than that.
