Luggage, soft or hard
« on: March 05, 2011, 12:19:28 PM »
Hi all. Thinking of what to get for my ybr125. First thought about a hard case, about 30-40 litre to hold my lid and d-locks. And to do my shopping(so domesticated lol) but iv heard they may make the bike unstable, especially when a little draughty. I then looked at the. Expanding tail packs, and I do like the look of them, and some are quite aerodynamic. What do you guys out there use, any personal preferences,?

I had a top box on my ybr .. was fine. Big enough to hold helmet and a couple of other bits and pieces. never seemed to make a difference. And I didn't have to buy luggage rack as it already had one  :thumb_up.
I use a tailpack on my sfv now though cause I haven't got luggage rack, both work ok for me ... I think it's down to use and personal preference really  :tup2

hi mate,
:i_agree it mainly depends on your personal choice, this is my oppinion-                 SOFT LUGGAGE -easy to remove/store when you dont need them on ya bike, also if you are going to use them for just carrying bits and pieces, then thats fine.
another thing to think of is your not going to keep the same back for ever are you?so it is easily transferable from bike to bike.
HARD LUGGAGE if your going off touring or off for the day (for instance a day watching racing etc,you can strip off ya kit and helmet and store it in ya panniers/top box and your free to walk around without the worry of carrying ya gear all day, also they can be FAIRLY locked secure to ya bike (soft luggage only needs a quick slice of a knife and they are away with ya gear etc,if youve stored ya helmet in em,your now stranded and cant drive home from where ever you are-bit of a twat in your in the middle of france on a sunday!!
also with hard luggage, you gotta buy all the various bolt on kit for each model of luggage to fit each bike-so when you sell ya bike you either let it go with the bike or you got to try to sell the kit on its own, again if its a good quality make you will have better chance of a sale, wheras if its a cheaper make you could end up lumbered with it,
So as i said its all down to your personal choice, just hope this has given you some thoughts on your decission.
all the best jenros :thumbsup

Snap. I had the yamaha top box (plastic) on my ybr125. Never found it unstable even above the recommended weight load and speed. Could fit a helmet, waterproof trousers and disc lock in there without problem or do a midweek shop if I used the box and a back pack. Again, all stable enough!

I bought a really cheap top box from Ebay to go on my YBR, worked a treat until  the mounts ripped out of the bottom, I knew carrying a heavy chain around was a mistake  :banghead Then again I guess we all do daft things in the beginning!  It was never unstable and I could fit my helmet in there etc.

I bought a cheap soft luggage set (£60) from Ghostbikes.

The set comprised of a expanding tail pack that's big enough for a helmet, expanding pannier set and an expanding tank bag.

I'm using the only the tank bag at the moment as I go to work, and that holds everything I need, like lunch, chain, spare visor, phone, wallet, etc, etc.
And as mentioned before, all easily removable. - Which is the other reason I use the tank bag. It just pops on and off easily, no straps as it's magnetised to the tank.

And, as also previously mentioned, this set can be moved from bike to bike as required.
