Returning Biker (Bridgend area)
« on: August 01, 2011, 03:16:38 PM »
Hi all, My name is Ryan and my son is Rhys.  I am living in the Bridgend area (Maesteg) and have been off the road for 2-3 years.  I have bought myself a 96' model ZX9-R which I find is a cheap and ample powered way to get back on the black stuff.  I enjoy a good rideout and so does my 10yr old son, so I am looking for rideouts that are suitable for my son (making the most of him while I can, he's already getting to cool to be seen with a dad in his late 30's) and even ones that aren't so suitable for any reason and have to turn up on my own.   If anyone knows of any clubs in Bridgend or Port Talbot area please get in contact.  Thanks.
Attending the Macmillan charity rideout in Newport on Sunday Aug 7th.  Everyone feel free to let me know of any rideouts going on and I will try my best to attend. :pc

Bikes don't leak oil',.... they mark their territory :o)           Sometimes it takes a whole tankful of fuel before you can think straight. Growing old is manditory... but growing up...well that my friends...is OPTIONAL!

Hi Ryan,
I'm way out West in Pembroke but if ever you are over this way My Son Glyn (aged 11 in 3 weeks) and myself would be happy to meet up for a day out.

Will consider that.  Maybe I could map out a round trip with a meet up point and departing point for us with a different route home and a stop or maybe two in between, maybe I could get badharry and his son to join us.  The big boys will have a good excuse to go out and play with younger lads.  Anyone would be free to join us of course.  I will scout for interest and look into organizing something.  I doesn't need to be a dad and boy day out, it could be a jolly for anyone who enjoys the company of a pillian.  I will look into it and post a suggestion.  I will pm you when I get something posted to check your interest.

Hello Ddraig, you're still on a provisional at the mo I assume?   Nice to hear from someone in this little dent of a valley.    Any plans on getting something a bit bigger to crunch the miles on?

Ddraig,  I was about 30 when I did my test.  I owned a bandit 1200 at the time of taking my test (really naughty I know).   I did my direct access with A1 in Llandow, I haggled the price and did it for £280 (that included my CBT and test), think they asked for £350.  I insured the bandit then for £330.  I was shocked at how low it was to insure for a new rider who just had his licence to ride a 1200cc bike.   It's worth doing your Direct Access, I made it back on insurance in the first year.  Insurance companies asked around £600 for insurance on a provisional, I asked for quotes with a full licence and booked my direct access straight away.
How long have you been riding now?   Got any idea when you plan to do your direct access?
The CB500 was a real easy bike to ride on the test( a dosile single cylinder),  the CG125 I did my CBT on was a real Gambo with pram wheels. They asked why I only did 60 up tondu road dual when the limit is 70?  I told them it was windy and raining and doing sixty on a 7 stone bike with little traction and drum brakes was brave enough.
The test was not to hard, means you have driven for 20 years and got a bit of experience under your belt you shouldn't have anything to worry about.
Get your test done, buy yourself a 600cc+ for a bit of comfort to crunch some miles away on and we can go on a few nice long rides.
We could do a few shortys with your 125 if you like?  :scooter   for a short run I'd suggest, over the Bwlch, through ferndale and over the Maerdy.  Pass Dare park, through Hirwaun and head back home over the Rhigos and Bwlch.   :scooter
A nice little run with plenty of twisty roads.
Let me know if you're interested.

Ddraig,  another good quicky is Afan Argoed, Margam Park,  pass Kenfig Pool to Porthcawl.  On the way back go straight through  Pyle Cross as if heading back to Margam and turn off to Aberbaiden lanes and come out in Tondu.  Up papermills road, home.    Both suggestions a nice hour, hour and half out.

Hi Ryan. Got my bike new with jts and did my cbt in Feb. Done a couple of longish runs with my gf following in her camper, one to Tenby, and just been to monmouth festival last weekend, went up on the a48, came back over heads of the valleys. Had a numb arse at the end of the ride lol. But loved it. Gonna do my mods early next year i hope. Keeping the 125 for 2 more years once i finish paying for it, plus its cheap on fuel, tax andinsurance. Then look for a 600 for myself. Iv come back from port toilet a couple of times past afan argoed and up over the top back to caerau.

You've got a few miles under your belt then.   We'll have to do a ride together soon.    If you do your direct access you won't have that 125 for another two years.  I understand your reasoning of finance, running costs etc etc, but it wont happen.  lol.    Hats off to you if you do,  that's more will power than most of us have.  I don't know what bike a YBR is but it sounds like you enjoy it by the milage you've done.

Not far off 4000 now( new rear tyre last week) i love it on the road, visor open, feelin the wind( til the kamikaze bugs attack lol) or like last night, dirty great big lorry full of straw bales, being driven by a complete numpty. Shall have to check when im free next, and we can sort out a bimble somewhere. Bloody stocktaking all this weekend bah humbug.
Yamaha ybr125 not a bad bike, i like its looks and it rides well, just gears can be a bit clunky between 1+2. But its just the right colour, Black :-)
