Is it the beginning of the end?
« on: July 06, 2011, 08:05:37 PM »
Good grief, you have some emoticons to choose from - good work!

Anyway, today I took the first step on my bike 'journey.'  I've been reading this forum for a little while now for hints, tips & recommendations but it seems it's about time to say Shw Mae!

For years (and I mean years) I've wanted to ride a bike.  My works have just moved from Cardiff to Swansea and it seems a bike is now the cheapest form of transport - result!!

So, having never ridden a motorbike before I took my theory today and have my CBT on Saturday.

I feel like I'm 17 (which, unfortunately I'm far from) again, learning to drive - I've not been this excited for years!!

Roll on Saturday.  One step at a time..........

Yeah - that's the plan (After a long chat and good advice from Andy @ 1st Class, Cardiff). I'm hoping to be through it by Aug 1st as that's when my job moves so don't want to be wasting money and time on the train, plus I can't wait to be part of the biking 'community.'  I've been driving for 20 years so am road savvy, used to play on a mates Bandit during a mis-spent youth and have spent years mountain biking.  None of them are the same as riding a bike, I know, but I figure there's bits from each I can take for a bit of confidence.

The wife's always pulling my head out of the clouds with my big plans but, hey, I'm already on ebay & bike trader every night trying to choose which Bandit/Hornet/SV650 I'll go for when I pass my DAS!

I'll probably be on a Honda 50 until next summer knowing my luck, but you got to think positive.

By the way - the Scotland road trip sounds an epic, can't wait to be part of this stuff. Oh, and you lot seem to drink more tea than mountain bikers - can't fault it.  A 160 mile round trip for some cake and tea?  I've been wasting my time!

Cheers.

Bikes don't leak oil',.... they mark their territory :o)           Sometimes it takes a whole tankful of fuel before you can think straight. Growing old is manditory... but growing up...well that my friends...is OPTIONAL!

greetings m8,

same story here more or less. couldn't do the daily commute with the car any more, so I went for the DAS.

took me about 5 weeks to get my mod2.

one of the happiest persons on the planet now. it is amazing what simple things can do.

all the best on Saturday. rain or no rain, I am sure that you will enjoy it.

Yeah - that's the plan (After a long chat and good advice from Andy @ 1st Class, Cardiff).

Did mine with 1st class, Simon 2 yrs ago, good bloke. Mention welshbikers u may get discount..

Still take it easy, listen well and practice, fingers crossed you make it first time, if not get straight back in there. Never know you may make a ride out while the sun shines :)

And to take a quote from Winston Churchill

"Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."

Well,  after a soaking wet morning in the training yard and a bright sunny afternoon on the road, my first step is done - CBT completed.

Loved it, can't believe it's taken me this long to get going.  Planning a couple of days training now on the bigger bikes before seriously getting stuck into the DAS.

Dangers of biking were highlighted on the CBT though as unfortunately one of the learners in our group had a crash on the road - off to the Heath in an ambulance.  Focussed my mind for the rest of the road ride for sure.

Roll on the next step!

(All credit to the instructors though who were blameless, professional, calm and in control throughout).
